FAU’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center Launches Pioneering Study Assessing Risk of Driving in Individuals with Mild Alzheimer’s Disease

BOCA RATON, FL (May 8, 2007) - The Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University will be conducting a research study that will determine if medication can prolong the period of time in which individuals with mild Alzheimer’s disease can drive safely. The Memory and Wellness Center at FAU is the only location in the country where this study is being conducted.

Peter Holland, M.D., research scientist, and Ruth Tappen, Ed.D., director of the Memory and Wellness Center, will be conducting this placebo-controlled, double blind study, which is being sponsored by a major pharmaceutical company. The Memory and Wellness Center is actively recruiting volunteers for this important study.

“With the lack of public transportation in South Florida, taking away an individual’s ability to drive is a serious matter,” said Holland. “If we can show that the individual’s period of safe driving can be extended for a year or more with an FDA-approved Alzheimer’s medication, it will significantly improve his or her quality of life and enhance public safety.”

Subjects will participate in the study for one year and complete comprehensive assessments, including vision tests, cognitive measures and driving tests. All subjects must be diagnosed with mild Alzheimer’s disease and will be closely monitored by a physician. Eligible participants will receive assessments and study medication at no cost and will be reimbursed for transportation expenses

According to a report recently released by the Alzheimer’s Association, there are now more than five million people in the United States living with Alzheimer’s disease. The greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s is increasing age. With 78 million baby boomers beginning to turn 60 last year, it is estimated that someone in America develops Alzheimer’s every 72 seconds.
