FAU Dedicates New Campus Recreation
and Fitness Center
BOCA RATON, FL (February 11, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University officials, students, faculty, staff and members of the community gathered today at the university’s Boca Raton campus to dedicate its brand-new campus recreation and fitness center.
“This remarkable facility will enhance the sense of tradition, pride and student life at Florida Atlantic University,” said Dr. Charles Brown, vice president for student affairs at FAU. “It is another significant step in the growth of this fine university.”
The $11 million, 38,100-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, located on the northern end of the Breezeway, is a place designed for FAU students, faculty, staff and alumni to meet, relax, workout and be engaged in campus life. It will provide new and improved recreation and fitness space, programming opportunities, and serve as a community hub for the university.
Facility features include:
- A 6,600-square-foot fitness center with more than 40 pieces of cardio equipment, two circuit training units, free weight area and a stretching area;
- Two fitness performance rooms designed for yoga, pilates, aerobics and spinning;
- Men’s and women’s health club-style locker rooms; and
- A multi-purpose gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and special events.
FAU student leaders began the project initiative in Spring 2004 by earmarking Capital Improvement Trust Funds to build the facility.
“This recreation facility has brought a newfound energy to FAU and is something students have been wanting for a long time,” said Abe Cohen, president of student government at FAU. “It provides a social outlet on campus, as well as an option for a healthier lifestyle. It also puts FAU one step closer to becoming a more traditional university.”
Phase II of the project is currently underway with a finish date yet to be determined. Included in the expansion is a multi-purpose activity court, a full-size court that will cater to a multitude of recreational activities; a fitness center addition of more than 4,000 square feet; a 17,000-square-foot aquatic facility including a leisure and lap pool with three, 25-yard lap lanes; a student and member lounge area; expanded locker rooms; and a food service area that will offer healthy snacks and drinks. Once completed, the center will total 77,000 square feet.
The center’s use is free for FAU students and available to faculty, staff and members of the Florida Atlantic University National Alumni Association for a semester or annual fee.
The architects for the project are Borelli + Partners, Inc. from Miami, and the construction manager is Kaufman Lynn General Contractors, Inc.
