FAU Lecture Addresses Cynicism and Sincerity in a Democratic Society

BOCA RATON (February 9, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s Jack Miller Forum presents Benjamin Storey of Furman University with the lecture “Cynicism and Sincerity in a Democratic Society.” The lecture will take place on Monday, February 16 at 1 p.m. in the Majestic Palm Room of the Student Union on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. It is free and open to the public.

Storey’s lecture analyzes the contrast between the romantic ideals of democracy and the cynical nature with which our society questions democracy. He offers a look at our present democratic society that is torn between the cynicism of late-night television and the desire to believe in something, or someone, larger than ourselves.

Storey is assistant professor of political science at Furman University. He received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

The lecture is the third of five to be presented during this academic year by the Jack Miller Forum at FAU. Future lectures include “History at Your Fingertips: What Wikipedia, Google, E-mail Mean to Students,” on Monday, March 16 at 1 p.m. and “The Future of Conservatism” on Friday, April 17 at 1 p.m.

The Jack Miller Forum, which is organized by the department of political science in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, is a three-year initiative funded by the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America’s Founding Principles and History.   The Miller Center provides a wide variety of resources to its partner faculty who are working to strengthen the teaching of America’s founding principles and history on college campuses across the United States.
