Memory and Wellness Center Collaborates with
University Club To Create Dazzling Decorations
BOCA RATON, FL – (February 12, 2007) A Mardi Gras-themed brunch and silent auction to benefit the FAU Libraries and scholarship endowment is being planned by members of the University Club of the Florida Atlantic University Foundation, Inc. Appropriately named, “Let the Good Times Roll,” this sure-to-be-fun event will bring a little bit of New Orleans tradition to the Boca West Country Club on Sunday, February 18 at 11 a.m. John Whelchel, president of Florida Aquastore & Utility Construction, Inc., and Susan Whelchel, deputy mayor of Boca Raton, are serving as honorary co-chairs of the fundraiser.
To help prepare for the event, members of the University Club have enlisted the support of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center. Participants with mild memory disorders from the adult day center are gluing gold glitter, boa feathers and colorful appliqués on magenta and turquoise blue umbrellas to create authentic looking accoutrements fit for a Mardi Gras “Second Line” parade. Under the supervision of Barbara Curtis, day center manager, and Shari Sanzo, activities assistant, a number of participants including Fran Goldstein, Virginia Casas and Gloria Chalfon are enjoying the challenge of transforming ordinary umbrellas into works of art.
“We hope that this will be the beginning of many such collaborations with the University Club and other community groups,” said Curtis. “What began as a simple request from University Club member and Memory and Wellness Center volunteer Pat Pearcy has blossomed into a wonderful partnership.”
“This is a mutually beneficial opportunity for both groups,” said Alene Brewer, president of the University Club. “Clients of the Memory and Wellness Center get the chance to discover, and in some cases rediscover, their artistic talents, and the University Club will have a generous supply of gorgeous Mardi Gras umbrellas.”
As a reward for their hard work, the entire adult day center will celebrate a Mardi Gras of their own, thanks to the membership of the University Club. A special party is in the works and will be held at the Memory and Wellness Center a few days after “Let the Good Times Roll.”
“I am delighted to be involved in this benefit to support fundraising opportunities for the FAU Libraries and scholarship programs,” says Deputy Mayor Susan Whelchel. “The University Club, of which I am a member, is a fundraising arm of FAU. Because the funding goes directly to the libraries and scholarship programs, I am happy to support its efforts.”
