Wachovia Lends Support to FAU Math Day Series
BOCA RATON, FL (January 10, 2011) – Florida Atlantic University’s department of mathematical sciences within the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science recently received $10,000 from Wachovia in support of the FAU Math Day series, “Encounters with FAU Math 2011.”
The series includes five separate mathematic events for middle and high school students which are designed to encourage and promote student interest in mathematics, recognize and reward mathematical excellence, as well as inspire and motivate students to pursue careers in mathematics and science. Recently, the department of mathematical sciences added the American Mathematics Competition for middle school students (AMC-8) to the series. Other events include an FAU Mini-Math Day, Internet Competition, American Mathematics Competition for senior high school students (AMC 10/12), and the FAU Math Day Extravaganza, which will be held on Saturday, April 2.
At a recent event, more than 80 middle school students participated in AMC-8. FAU is the only Florida university to offer the AMC-8, which provides an opportunity to apply the mathematical concepts taught at the middle school level, and promotes enthusiasm and excitement toward the future study of mathematics.
