FAU Center for Autism and Related Disabilities Hosts Statewide Conference
BOCA RATON, FL (January 15, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) will host the 16 th annual statewide CARD conference beginning Saturday, January 17 at 8:30 a.m. at the West Palm Beach Airport Hilton. The conference, themed “Leading Florida in Autism Support: Strengthening Families, Schools & Communities on Autism,” will conclude Sunday, January 18 at 1 p.m.
Conference topics will include autism research, treatment, educational strategies and related issues. Dr. Sophia Colarino, vice president of research for Autism Speaks , will open the conference with a keynote address examining current efforts to determine the cause or causes of autism.
State Representative Ari Porth of Broward County will accept an award from Florida’s CARD centers in recognition of his support for children with autism and their families. Porth co-sponsored the Autism Insurance Bill during the last legislative session. This bill dramatically increases coverage for autism treatment for many Florida children. The award will be presented just prior to Colarino’s keynote address.
