FAU Civic Engagement Week to Enhance Student, Community Understanding of Key Presidential Issues
BOCA RATON , FL (January 8, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University will host “Join It!” a series of civic engagement events to coincide with the presidential primary debates. The events will take place Monday, January 14 through Friday, January 18 at FAU, prior to the Florida presidential primary debates at the end of the month.
“Join It!” seeks to involve students and members of the community in the political process; facilitate and encourage voter registration; enhance student and community understanding of key issues related to the 2008 election; and nurture an appreciation of the broader electoral process. Civic engagement week is a volunteer effort involving FAU students, faculty and staff from various university campus locations.
Key topics of discussion include education, women and politics, making democracy work, the economy, healthcare, business and social security, climate change, energy policy, and the Iraq War.

Featuring Greg Giraldo and other guest comedians
Monday, January 14, 7 p.m.
Carole and Barry Kaye Auditorium, FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road
Greg Giraldo and Comedy Central’s top comedians are starring in this special election-year evening of political satire and stand-up comedy. The show will also include special guest James Adomian, George W. Bush impersonator from the “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”
This is a ticketed event. Free tickets are currently available to FAU students, faculty and staff with an Owl Card. Free tickets will be available to the general public on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning Thursday, January 10.
Two tickets per person will be distributed at the following locations:
- FAU Boca Raton Student Union Box Office, Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- FAU Davie Student Union Room 203 B, Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- FAU Jupiter – The Burrow, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to midnight
- FAU Treasure Coast JU 113, Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For Floridians, the presidential election is not just about selecting a presidential candidate, but about issues close to home, such as the proposed property tax amendment and personal injury protection. In a panel discussion moderated by FAU political science assistant professor Kevin Wagner, State Rep. Shelley Vana, State Rep. Mary Brandenburg, State Rep. Susan Bucher and State Rep. Carl J. Domino will field questions about these hot button issues for Floridians. This is a great opportunity for area residents to have their voices heard by their representatives in Tallahassee.

FAU Student Government Association will host a presidential mock debate moderated by Florida State Rep. Maria Sachs. Six students will represent the presidential candidates – three Democrats, three Republicans – and will debate the issues that lay at the forefront of the current U.S. presidential election. FAU President Frank T. Brogan will open the floor after the debate for a Q&A session with other Florida-elected officials, including Boca Raton Mayor Steven Abrams, State Sen. Jeff Atwater, State Rep. Susan Bucher and State Rep. Ari Porth.
