Students from the department of physics and the Society of Physics in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science hosted its first-ever Pumpkin Drop on Oct. 31. A "pumpkin master professor" and student assistants dropped both hollow and filled pumpkins of all sizes from atop the roof of the SE building.
"Aristotle," "Galileo," "Sir Isaac Newton" and "Albert Einstein" (who is pictured below) explained the common physics principles involved, including constant acceleration of gravity, terminal velocity and Newton's laws.

The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts announced the winners for “Quilted Books? Gold Coast Quilters Guild Book Arts Competition,” the center’s first celebration of quilted fabric artist books earlier this fall. The winning entry, Jane Gavlick’s “In Touch With American Quilters,” a movable book that is a 110-inch scroll of quilt squares with text tucked inside a wind-up quilt-covered box, has been purchased by the center and has become part of the Jaffe collection. Elizabeth Locke, Pamela Kepchar and Donna Organ also were recognized.

Earlier this fall, hundreds of FAU employees, family and friends raised nearly $30,000 through this year's Heart Walk events at the Boca Raton, Jupiter and Treasure Coast campuses. “Flying South,” a charcoal, pencil and paper on cut-out folded paper by Nancy Nieves is part of the “Beyond Abstraction” exhibition running through Friday, Dec. at the MacArthur Campus Library Gallery. The exhibition features works on paper by Nancy Nieves, an art professor at Gaston College in Dallas, N.C. and a former art instructor at the FAU. Her exhibition features works in watercolor, acrylic paint, pencil and mixed-media.

Students from the MacArthur campus participated in fundraising for the American Red Cross Peruvian Earthquake Relief fund. $386.21 was raised and the funds were presented to Ryan Cairns, director of financial development on Sept. 18. The fundraiser was led by Katherine Mockler and sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement & Service, Jupiter campus. Students and staff who participated in the fundraiser are pictured presenting the check to the American Red Cross: Cara Piccirillo, Corbin Hines, Anna Leech, Lauren Bimmler, Peter Steele, Katherine Mockler, Ryan Cairns (American Red Cross) and Heather Bishara.
