Students from the department of physics and the Society of Physics in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science hosted its first-ever Pumpkin Drop on Oct. 31. A "pumpkin master professor" and student assistants dropped both hollow and filled pumpkins of all sizes from atop the roof of the SE building.
"Aristotle," "Galileo," "Sir Isaac Newton" and "Albert Einstein" (who is pictured below) explained the common physics principles involved, including constant acceleration of gravity, terminal velocity and Newton's laws.

The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts announced the winners for “Quilted Books? Gold Coast Quilters Guild Book Arts Competition,” the center’s first celebration of quilted fabric artist books earlier this fall. The winning entry, Jane Gavlick’s “In Touch With American Quilters,” a movable book that is a 110-inch scroll of quilt squares with text tucked inside a wind-up quilt-covered box, has been purchased by the center and has become part of the Jaffe collection. Elizabeth Locke, Pamela Kepchar and Donna Organ also were recognized.
