Dr. Kristen Murtaugh (right), vice president of the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, was named the 2006/07 Community Leader of the Year by the North Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce. Murtaugh received her award at the chamber’s annual Leadership Luncheon held recently at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens.
Casey Steinbacher, president and CEO of the chamber, said, “Dr. Murtaugh is very deserving of this award. Her leadership within FAU and with so many nonprofit organizations shows her dedication to the betterment of our community. The north Palm Beach County area is proud to salute her as an example of the dynamic leadership that is responsible for the unprecedented growth and success of our community.”
In addition to her position at FAU, Murtaugh has taken on several leadership roles in the community. She serves on the boards of the Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition, the Lighthouse Center for the Arts, the Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, the United Way of Palm Beach County and the North Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce, and is an active participant on projects and committees.
Most recently, Murtaugh took on the task of leading the United Way of Palm Beach County as 2006/07 Campaign Chair. She established a plan to increase participation and recruited other community leaders to assist her, resulting in a record campaign of $15 million.

IBM Southeast Employees’ Federal Credit Union (EFCU) made a $20,000 donation to establish a scholarship program for student at at FAU Jupiter. The IBM Southeast EFCU MacArthur Campus Scholarship will support MacArthur campus students who are studying biology, chemistry or other life sciences.
“We are thrilled to strengthen our partnership with IBM Southeast EFCU and grateful for their generous scholarship support of our students,” said Dr. Kristen Murtaugh, campus vice president.
IBM Southeast EFCU has 15 branches in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. One of the newest branch sites, located in Abacoa, provides convenient access for FAU employees and students, as well as employees of Scripps Florida.
“As a provider of credit union services and products for Florida Atlantic University and Scripps Florida, we are delighted to provide this scholarship endowment,” said Lary McCants, IBM Southeast EFCU president/CEO.
“We recognize the financial challenges facing young adults today as the costs of attaining a higher education continue to grow,” said Dolly Champey, president, PGA Division of IBM Southeast EFCU. “With the formation of this scholarship, we are able to help eligible FAU students lessen that financial burden.”
