FAU Takes $60 Million
Priorities List to Tallahassee

A delegation of faculty, staff, students and administrators — led by President Brogan and Board of Trustees Chair Sherry Plymale — will head to Tallahassee this month with a priorities list of more than $60 million for programs and projects that address student and community needs. In addition to attending meetings and holding discussions with legislators, University representatives will host a display at the Capitol Building showcasing the breadth of FAU’s work, from leading-edge research and development to academic and athletic achievements. FAU will also sponsor the Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation Reception, which will provide a setting for one-on-one conversations with lawmakers as well as an opportunity to greet FAU alumni and supporters.

“We are taking a realistic priorities list to Tallahassee and we feel confident that our friends in the Legislature will give it their support,” President Brogan said. “These funds are needed to enable us to move ahead with many of the initiatives that are outlined in our recently completed strategic plan.”

The Priorities List
As in years past, the University’s funding priorities are aligned with the Florida Board of Governors’ (BOG) strategic goals, which are as follows:

  • Access to and Production of Degrees
  • Meeting Statewide Professional and Workforce Needs
  • Building World-Class Academic Programs and Research Capacity
  • Meeting Community Needs and Fulfilling Unique Institutional Responsibilities

To extend its reach and enhance degree production, FAU is seeking $33 million, including $12 million for full funding of the SUS enrollment plan, based on the BOG formula. Also included in this portion of the request are $6.5 million to maintain quality support services and infrastructure, $5 million to fund core disciplines, $4 for need-based financial aid, $3.5 million for deferred maintenance and $2 million to fund efforts to increase retention and decrease time-to-degree.

To address the challenge of meeting statewide professional and workforce needs, the University is seeking $8.4 million. Of that total, $4.3 million represents increased funding for high-need/high-demand areas such as nursing, education and high technology, $2.1 million is for the support of FAU’s medical education partnership with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Boca Raton Community Hospital, and $2 million is to provide scholarship assistance to students in targeted areas.

FAU is seeking $14.35 million to build world-class academic programs and research capacity, including $5.5 million for faculty salaries and start-up expenses, $4 million for technology support, $3 million for graduate student tuition waiver enhancements and $1.85 million for library collections and services.

In the final strategic goal category, meeting community needs and fulfilling unique institutional responsibilities, FAU is seeking $3.75 million. Of this amount, $2.5 million would go to partner campus operating costs and $1.25 million to academic programs tailored to regional needs.

Additionally, the University is seeking $668,000 for the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, $235,000 for the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center and $200,000 for the Florida Israel Institute at FAU.

These requests are in addition to $38.25 million for seven BOG-approved PECO projects. PECO, an acronym for Public Education Capital Outlay trust fund, derives its funding from state utilities taxes. PECO money is used exclusively for the construction and renovation of publicly owned buildings. FAU’s 2006-07 PECO project list is as follows:

FAU/UF Joint Use Facility – Davie Campus
(Phase I Construction)

$16.4 million
Port St. Lucie Campus Building Phase II $10 million
Campus Infrastructure and Improvements $3.15 million
Engineering Building (Planning) $3 million
FAU/UF Joint Use Facility – Davie Campus (Planning) $2.6 million
FAU/Scripps Building $2 million
Expansion of Computer Center $1.1 million
