FAU and the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce honored the Spring 2006 recipients of partial-tuition scholarships for St. Lucie County School District staff.
The tuition assistance scholarships, created by the chamber’s education and business partnerships committee, one designed to helpteachers and professional support staff who are seeking courses from FAU in preparation for initial state teacher certification. St. Lucie County School District employees Virginie Milfort, Tywannia Moorer, Vernesha Swoope, Rachel Ellsworth, Margaret Subock, Mary Kay Black and Heather Gray are the Spring 2006 recipients.
"Florida Atlantic University is working to build a strong tradition of tuition assistance programs," says Annie Boehning, FAU Treasure Coast campus development director. "This scholarship has far-reaching impact on many educators and paraprofessionals. For many, the goal of certification would be out of reach without assistance from institutional scholarships funded through the generosity of alumni, corporations and other private donors."
The FAU Foundation's collection of 65 oil paintings by renowned Floridia artist A.E. "Beanie" Backus are on loan to the A.E. Backus Gallery & Museum, 500 North Indian River Drive, Fort Pierce, as part the Gallery & Museum's tribute to Backus on the centennial anniversary of his birth. In addition to FAU's collection, the exhibit includes other Backus originals in oil, watercolor and graphite, as well as items from his home and studio.
Backus, who died in 1990 at the age of 84, has long been recognized as Florida's preeminent landscape painter. His works capture the natural beauty of a vanishing Florida. The University's collection of Backus paintings came to FAU through a bequest from Thomas F. Fleming, whose efforts were instrumental in the establishment of the University in 1961.
