CHILDREN OF THE WHITE HOUSE:
AN OUTREACH, COMMUNITY-WIDE FAMILY EVENT

Recipient of the LLS 1999 Excellence in Teaching Award

DESCRIPTION: We all know about United States presidents and their wives. What about the children of these presidential parents? Did they fulfill the expectations of their family heritage? What unusual events took place in their lives and how did these events affect the path of history? How did they cope with their unusual position and how did they relate to their parents? Myrna Goldberger will present the stories of “First Children” using costumes and visuals. Which White House daughter was arrested for posing for Playboy Magazine? Which child more than once failed the bar exam? Which son, against parental wishes, wanted to be an actor? Which one lived the longest? This self-written, one-time event will present Edutainment focused on presidential history and provide answers to the question, “Would you have wanted to be a child of the White House?” Note: This event is a family affair and children and grandchildren are encouraged to attend.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Myrna Goldberger has been an instructor for the Lifelong Learning Society (LLS) for 21-plus years. Educated at the University of Maryland, Loyola College and Johns Hopkins University, Myrna has had 50-plus years of experience in educational programming, including Elderhostel and scholar-in-residence weekends. She currently presents lectures to community and religious groups, as well as to special-interest groups in Florida and other states. Moreover, she performs in self-written, one-act plays focusing on famous American women and men. Her students, who call themselves “Myrna’s Groupies,” describe her as “charismatic, knowledgeable and dynamic.” Myrna calls what she does “Edutainment” and she has been the recipient of several LLS awards.
