A Yiddish Panorama: A Thousand Years or More of Yiddish Language and Culture
Riva Ginsburg

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Building on her very popular, educational and entertaining lectures for LLS in the Spring 2014 and Winter 2015, Riva Ginsburg will continue with this 4-week lecture and language series. Yiddish is often referred to as the "secret language."  Ms. Ginsburg will begin with a historical background as well as an overview of the language and culture. The series will continue with insights into its many facets which will include Wisdom, Humor, Characters, Literature, Theater, Music and of course we'll learn curses and blessings and even a few Bubbe Maises. Be ready to learn and listen to a bissele Yiddish, laugh a lot and bring to life a beautiful culture.

1. Yiddish: Our DaVinci Code...Where it all began with some tam (flavor) : Blessings, Curses, Hopes, Fears with even a couple of Bubbe Maises.
2. Nu, So what's so funny? A Klayne Gelekhter: The Mommas and the Poppas and some of the other Nokhshleppters.
3. Songs of our History, Yiddish Theater and More.
4. The Times They are A'Changing: New Frontiers in the Yiddish Language
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Riva Ginsburg  has taught Yiddish Language and Culture at both State University of New York (SUNY) Binghamton and Florida Atlantic University.  While at Binghamton, she was credited as having the largest Yiddish program in the country with over 100 students each semester. She presents lectures and courses through Lifelong Learning at FAU as well as country clubs and various organizations.  Riva was born in a displaced person camp in Fahrenvald, Germany after World War II and Yiddish was her native tongue. As a daughter of Holocaust Resistance fighters, she lectures on Jewish Resistance and the Generation After the Holocaust.  She received an undergraduate degree at Stony Brook University and completed graduate work in the field of education and conflict management.
