Love and Lust in the Hearts of Artists
Terryl Lawrence

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This series will present an historical perspective on the life and times of personalities who achieved high artistic merit. This lecture series will examine the dynamics that contributed to their successes, and in some cases, the uproar that their works precipitated. Each artistic personality is unique in motivation and desire. We will uncover some of their working methodology and examine the historical context in which they created. Archival images and films will enrich the lectures.

1. Toulouse Lautrec and Montmartre - nothing escaped his prying eye
2. Alphonse Mucha - his name is synonymous with Art Nouveau
3. Cleopatra's Dramas - The last Pharaoh and her glorious Ancient Egypt
4. Salvador Dali - "I am Surrealism"
5. Walt Whitman & Winslow Homer- both stood alone as men and artists
6. Bernard Berenson & Joseph Duveen - collusion between eminent art critic and successful art dealer
7. Auguste Rodin & Camille Claudel - lovers and pioneers of modern sculpture
8. Maya Lin & Frederick Hart - Architect & Sculptor, best known for their stunning public works
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Terryl Lawrence earned a Ed.D. in the Arts from Columbia University. She has had numerous exhibitions of her paintings and photographs in New York and Florida, and is the recipient of many awards, including a national grant in the humanities . She wrote the preface to Chaim Potok’s Artist in Exile and taught photography, drawing and art history at CW Post College, SUNY Empire State College, FAU, and other public and private institutions. In the past, she was a fashion designer in New York, and she has written several children’s books. Currently, she is a professor at the Digital Media Arts College – Boca Raton, teaching drawing, art history, and mythology—and she loves every minute of “living with art.”
