19th Century American Romanticism

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This four-part lecture series, 19th Century American Romanticism, focuses on a single writer in each lecture. The writings of Emerson, Hawthorne, Poe, and Melville, will be discussed, focusing on a analysis of the formal elements  in their work and in the writings and the themes they suggest. Enrollees will gain an understanding of the formal elements of literary analysis, the stylistic tendencies of American Romantics, and the common themes they tend to explore. By the end of the series, we hope you will gain a stronger grasp of the style and subject matter characteristic of this American literary era.

1. Emerson's transcendental vision
2. The duality of man in Hawthorne
3. Romantic symbolism in Poe
4. Melville on the cusp of realism
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: An English Professor at Lynn University, Dr. Morgan is the author of Sarah Orne Jewett's Feminine Pastoral Vision: The Country of the Pointed Firs and edited a 2003 edition of her novel. An educator for 31 years, Morgan is also the author of numerous essays and poems. He earned his B.A. in English from Ohio University, his M.A. in English from Pan American University, and his Ph.D. in English from Case Western Reserve University. He lives in Boynton Beach, FL with his wife, Dana.
