Miracle Cures, Magical Pills and Quick Fixes:
Welcome to 22nd Century Medicine
Steven S. Charlap
EVENT DESCRIPTION: In the 21st Century, the media constantly bombards us with news of technological breakthroughs meant to transform modern medicine from a prevention, diagnosis and treatment perspective. In 2013, however, we are still left with largely ineffective treatments for cancer; a growing epidemic of chronic diseases; and painful, invasive and bloody surgeries. However, current avenues of scientific investigation may yet produce real breakthroughs that promise to live up to the ballyhooed claims of miracle cures, magical pills and quick fixes. This lecture will explore the future of medicine based on today's research.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Dr. Steven S. Charlap received his M.D. at New York University School of Medicine and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He also trained as a surgeon at Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC. As the founder of HealthDrive, he built the largest U.S. medical/dental practice which served five million long-term-care patients in thirteen states. First-hand experience with Americans suffering with chronic disease motivated Charlap to create and start MDPrevent where he is the Chief Medical Officer. MDPrevent supports and educates on how to make lifestyle changes to avoid chronic disease. His publications include Making Sense of Nursing Homes - A Guide for Families and two new books, one on longevity and centenarians and another about the media's influence on consumer health practices. Both are planned for publication in 2014.
