The "Secrets" of the Secret Service
Recipient of the LLS 1999 Excellence in Teaching Award
EVENT DESCRIPTION: A wall of secrecy has for years surrounded the Secret Service. Yet, this agency, which began operating as a division of the Treasury Department in 1865, has become more "public" in recent times. This lecture will focus on the not-so-well-known inside stories of the Secret Service and the group of agents who would sacrifice their lives to protect the president. Included will be the history of the agency, the organizational details surrounding it, its merits, its problems and unusual, even humorous, anecdotal accounts of 20th-century First Families and their interaction with this branch of government. How did a psychic prophecy affect the motorcade of George H.W. Bush? How did Lyndon Johnson cause crises with Secret Service agents? Did Hillary Clinton really throw a lamp at Bill? What did Ronald Regan want to do that had to be especially arranged by the agents? Answers to these questions and other tid-bits will be revealed in this one-woman performance by Myrna Goldberger, supported by costumes and visuals.
