Intensive English Track:

TOEFL and IELTS Preparation

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
The TOEFL is an internationally accepted standard for academic English proficiency required by most American and other English-speaking universities. The test evaluates a potential student’s ability to use English as it is spoken, written, and heard in an academic environment. This exam is a required certification at more than 5000 universities and colleges worldwide. The TOEFL plays a key role in admissions decisions for international applicants. The TOEFL is also a valuable tool for those who wish to apply for professional certification or licensure to gain marketability in an English-speaking job market.

Because of the academic demands of this exam, TOEFL Preparation is offered only as an afternoon elective in place of the Conversation block.

TOEFL Preparation - Elective*
Our TOEFL Preparation classes greatly increase students’ chances of achieving a successful score on the exam. The IEI offers this course to students in Levels 4 and 5 who pass a qualifying exam; the course takes the place of the Conversation block. By practicing various test questions, analyzing sections of the exam, and learning test-taking strategies, students gain valuable tools for success and approach the exam with greater confidence.

*Students must pass a qualifying test, given at the beginning of the term, to take this course.

International English Language Testing System Exam (IELTS)
The IELTS exam is an alternative to the TOEFL that is now accepted at many American and other English-speaking universities as proof of English ability. The test evaluates a potential student or professional’s ability to use English as it is spoken, written, and heard in an academic environment; however, the format is somewhat different from that of the TOEFL.

Depending on demand, IELTS preparation may be offered as an afternoon elective (in place of the Conversation block) or as a Friday Afternoon Elective.

IELTS Preparation - Elective

In our IELTS Preparation elective, students are guided through the different sections of the exam, learning and practicing test-taking strategies to improve scores. The IEI offers this course primarily to students in Levels 4 and 5 who pass a qualifying exam; students in Level 3 may also qualify for this comprehensive elective course.

*Students must pass a qualifying test, given at the beginning of the term, to take this course.

IELTS Preparation - Friday Afternoon Elective Course

In certain semesters, the IELTS Preparation Course is given as a 6-hour overview course in the Friday Afternoon Elective program. Students in levels 3, 4, and 5 may take this course; no qualifying test is required.
