Artistic Contributions

With sincere appreciation, we recognize the following individuals for their artistic contributions to the Inauguration ceremony of FAU's sixth President.

Ms. Angela DiCosola
Professor of Art
Lessons Learned
6' x 6' x 9' mixed media, 2009

Throughout our lives, from the moment we are born and well into our elder years, the act of living offers us a multitude of experiences and opportunities in which lessons are provided from which we learn. It is how we respond and what we learn from these opportunities that helps us become who we are. Lessons Learned addresses this philosophy, whether our lessons are from our formal education or from our social interactions. Ultimately through these lessons, we strive to become better people, finding peace, prosperity and goodwill in our lifetime.

The conceptual significance of the Origami Crane, the Japanese tradition of folding 1,000 paper cranes, is a prayer for health, prosperity and good fortune. Since the bombing of Hiroshima, the paper crane has also come to express a prayer for peace.

"Paper Crane, I will write peace on your wings and you will fly all over the world." - Sadako Sasaki, age 12

Share in the experience by taking a "Making Waves" origami crane from the accompanying collaborative piece to Professor DiCosola's Lesson Learned; both on display in the lobby of the Student Union.

Dr. Stuart Glazer
Professor of Music

Two Emily Dickinson Poems for Mixed Chorus and Wind Ensemble by Stuart Glazer was commissioned by FAU especially for the occasion of President Saunders’ inauguration. Today’s performance is the work’s world premiere. The poetry of Emily Dickinson has always touched the composer deeply. These pieces are settings of two Dickinson poems for the unique combination of mixed chorus and symphonic wind ensemble. Both of these poems, "A Little Road Not Made of Man" and "Angels in the Early Morning," speak to the spirituality and the sense of awe and wonder that can be found in nature.

The Jaffe Center for Book Arts
Book Arts 101: The Handmade Book in a Nutshell was printed and bound by students and staff at the Jaffe Center. The cover is printed letterpress from the Center's collection of historic 19th-century wood type. The bookmark is printed letterpress, by hand, from historic 19th-century wood type. John L. Cutrone, designer.

Homecoming Window Painting
In 2006, window painting became part of the student organizations’ Homecoming competition. It is one of the major events that allow registered student organizations or residence hall communities to show their FAU pride and enthusiasm through creativity and artistic expression. The student organizations paint windows in the Student Union and residence halls and are awarded points by a panel of judges.
