Policy on Credit by Examination

Honors College students may receive up to 45 credit hours through four programs: Advanced Placement (AP), Advanced International Certificate in Education (AICE), International Baccalaureate (IB) and College Level Examination Program (CLEP).

Advanced Placement (AP) Policy

The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College recognizes the rigor of AP classes by both allowing extra weight for AP course work in calculating GPAs and by awarding academic credit. AP exams are given at the end of the year in high school AP courses. Students may earn credits for AP exams as specified below. Credit will not be awarded for both AP and CLEP examinations covering the same course material.

Official test scores sent directly from the testing center to FAU are required in order to award credit. Contact:

College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Policy

Subject Examinations Policy

Undergraduate students may earn credits from the CLEP examinations provided they have not received comparable college credit in the CLEP examination area or have not completed a more advanced course in which the accumulation of knowledge or skills in the examination area is essential. Minimum scores are subject to change at any time. Official scores must be sent to FAU from the testing center. Scores cannot be posted from other institutions' transcripts. To obtain official scores visit Collegeboard; for a Transcript Request form and other pertinent information call 800.257.9558. For FAU course equivalents for given examinations, see the FAU online catalog.

international certificate

Advanced International Certificate in Education Policy

The AICE program is an international, advanced secondary curriculum and assessment program equivalent to the British system of "A-Levels". For FAU course equivalents see the FAU online catalog.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Policy

Students from International Baccalaureate programs are encouraged to apply to the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. The challenging curriculum, the dedicated faculty, the small size of the classes - all make the Honors College an excellent choice for IB students.

Honors College Curriculum

Much like the IB program, there are required core courses in mathematics and natural sciences; social and behavioral analysis; culture, ideas, and values; literature and the arts; foreign language; critical inquiry and interdisciplinary learning; and international and environmental studies. There is a strong emphasis on writing, including a required senior thesis, and an experiential learning component for all students (either study-abroad or an internship).

Credit for IB course work and examinations

The Honors College recognizes the rigor of the IB program and awards credit based on IB exam scores. Students will be awarded up to thirty (30) semester credits. In general, students will be awarded credit for one term of the appropriate course for each subject exam score of four (4) and credit for two terms of the appropriate course(s) for each subject exam score of five (5) or higher. For details about specific course credit, see the FAU online catalog.
