  • Masters Ocean Engineering, Cranfield University (UK). 2001
  • Bachelors Electronics and Electrical Engineering, The University of Edinburgh (UK). 1995

Overview

  • Directs the underwater laser imaging and communications research program at HBOI-FAU. Current research activities relate to developing advanced computer models and test-tank hardware systems for next generation underwater laser-based sensor networks. Program highlights to date include the construction of a world-class underwater laser test facility; the design, fabrication, testing and evaluation of a patented compact scanning architecture for underwater synchronous scanning laser imagers; successful benchtop demonstration of a pulsed-gated laser line scan (PG-LLS) extended range underwater imaging system; successful validation of an image simulation model for the LLS class of imagers; successful benchtop demonstration of distributed LLS concept; ongoing development and validation of distributed LLS radiative transfer imaging and communications models.
  • Lead Engineer on several technology support projects (mainly funded through the State of Florida). Has provided ROV, AUV and fixed observatory solutions to provide at-sea observations and measurements for scientific studies (e.g. benthic studies at deep coral reefs, coastal water quality monitoring surveys); liaise with collaborating scientist and ocean engineering staff through system specification, preliminary to detailed design, modeling, production, documentation to laboratory and field testing.
