Update for U.S. Citizens Traveling to EU Countries

The European Parliament has passed a resolution asking that the European Commission take action in the next two months to end the short-term visa exemption for U.S. citizens traveling to the European Union. The visa exemption currently in place for U.S. citizens allows traveling to Europe for tourism travel up to 90 days without obtaining a travel visa. At this time, there is no immediate impact for U.S. citizens. However, we ask that you stay connected with the Education Abroad office regarding updates or changes that will impact your visa/entry requirements for your summer study abroad program.

While we strive to provide updated, factual information to the University community, we cannot provide legal advice or otherwise interpret the law. Individuals seeking legal advice should consult the immigration attorney of their choice.

If you're reading this, it probably means you don't have a passport yet – that makes you just like most Americans. In fact, 70% of your fellow citizens don't have a passport. But why run with the crowd? Make a statement: get a passport.

The fact is, if you don't have a passport you can't leave the U.S. to go anywhere – not even to Mexico or Canada.
