Out of the Book: Selections from the Arthur & Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts

Shown Concurrently in both Ritter and Schmidt Center Galleries
September 17 - October 30, 2010

This two gallery exhibition presents a thematic selection of over 200 works featuring the finest and most innovative works from over 6,000 artists’ books held in FAU’s Wimberly Library. Presented on the occasion of the donors 90th birthday, the exhibition represents the three-fold growth of the collection since it was first donated to FAU in 1998. The exhibition is co-curated by Linda Johnson, Chair Department of Visual Arts and Art History, and Kate Schmidt Assistant Professor, Department of English in collaboration with Arthur Jaffe and John Cutrone of the Jaffe Center for Book Arts. Art students enrolled in a special course this past summer worked in the collection to interpret and design the exhibition.

The Jaffe Collection is one of the largest and most varied collections of its kind in the country consisting primarily of visual books acquired more for their artistic expression than for their informational content. The essential focus of the collection is on artists’ books and the broader topics of the Book Arts: letterpress printing, fine binding, hand papermaking and paper decoration. Many of the one of a kind sculptural book objects, limited edition book works and editioned portfolios represent collaborations between artists, authors and printmakers.
