Student Health Services advises students to take precautionary measures against influenza (flu). Flu season has begun and will last as late as May 2013. Everyone 6 months and older is encouraged to get vaccinated against the flu. "We strongly encourage FAU students to get vaccinated against the flu every year. And this year the flu shot is free at Student Health Services!" said Carine Porfiri, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, FAU Student Health Services.

Flu is a contagious disease, caused by the influenza virus, and spreads to others when infected persons cough, sneeze or talk. Individuals at high risk for flu complications include children, pregnant women, persons age 65 years and over, and persons of any age with chronic medical conditions. It is especially important for these individuals and their caretakers to get vaccinated.

Along with getting vaccinated, these steps are very effective in preventing the spread of influenza:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Do not share eating utensils, drinking glasses, towels or other personal items.
- Stay home when you are sick, keep sick children home and check with a health care provider, as needed.
Inform your professors if you need to miss class due to the flu.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick, if possible.
- Avoid crowds and areas where people congregate and are likely to be sneezing and coughing.

Common symptoms of the flu include: Fever (usually high), headache, extreme tiredness, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (much more common among children than adults). For more flu information, visit www.flu.gov.

October 2012 has been designated National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a consortium consisting of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and partners from federal, state and local government, academia and industry. The NCSAM program at FAU will focus on educating students, faculty, staff and the public about how to secure their parts of Cyberspace — their desktop, mobile, laptop and tablet computers.

The Division of Research is pleased to announce the second year of a University-wide Faculty Research Seed Grant Program to foster increased extramural funding by facilitating the development of innovative research ideas and collaborations that will lead to successful grant applications. A total of $250,000 is available to support this program. However, the number of awards funded will depend on the quality and types of proposals submitted. The maximum award amounts are $20,000 for collaborative awards and $5,000 for individual awards. A principal investigator can qualify for only one award.

The objectives of the seed grant program are to:
- Encourage groups of researchers to collaborate on new avenues of research that otherwise would not be possible if explored independently.
- Assist early stage researchers to establish themselves as independent investigators by facilitating a record of preliminary research that will lead to successful grant applications in the future.
- Support researchers who received favorable reviews for their proposals but were unsuccessful with funding due to recommendations to perform additional research or testing.

FAU will celebrate the opening of the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts hand papermaking lab with a 1940s-style party on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 5 to 9 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 4, from 2 to 6 p.m., in the T-6 building, one of the original buildings on the former Boca Raton Army Air Field site, which became the Boca Raton campus. On Wednesday, Nov. 7, join Dr. Xun Liu, associate professor of history at Rutgers University, at 7:10 p.m. in Board of Trustees Room, AD 305, Boca Raton campus for "Daoism in the Twentieth Century." Arguably one of the biggest developments in Chinese history writing of the past decade is the "discovery" of the core of modernity in areas that the modern was previously taken to exclude. Xun Liu's Daoist Modern is one key work that seeks to repair a rift in twentieth century Chinese history that seems counterintuitive to those working on earlier periods -- the separation of religious from social, political, and cultural life. His detailed examination of an influential community of lay Daoist intellectuals in 1930s Shanghai shows how religious innovation was thoroughly interwoven with urban society and communications and the rise of bioscience, cultural competition and nationalism. The Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present "With Their Voices Raised" on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre, Boca Raton campus. The documentary theatre performance based on stories from 51 survivors of the bombings of Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima. The performance seeks to share the human face of war from the perspective of survivors who came from countries that bombed each other during World War II. After the performance, audience members will be invited to share in a discussion about the meaning and message of the film.

In the years after World War II, Americans believed that full participation in the mass consumer society promised widespread prosperity, as well as the long sought goals of a freer and more equal nation. High consumption remained the reigning strategy for achieving a democratic and affluent America until the recent recession, beginning in 2008, raised fundamental questions. Not only do rising home foreclosures and growing personal debt continue to threaten the viability of what the lecturer calls the "Consumers' Republic," but it is not clear how, if not through greater consumption, the United States will work its way out of recession. Can we still consume our way to recovery -- or not?

The Hertz Foundation Scholarship is for senior or graduate students for graduate work in the physical sciences and has a deadline of November 2.

The Soros is for New American seniors or graduate students for up to 2 years of graduate study with a deadline of November 1. These scholarships do not require FAU nomination.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is for exceptional college students who intend to pursue careers in science, mathematics, or engineering. Students intending to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice. Applicants must be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior with a GPA of at least a B, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. For the 2010-2011 academic year, winners had an average GPA of 3.95. FAU internal deadline is December 15.

The Truman Scholarship is a $30,000 merit based grant awarded to outstanding undergraduate juniors who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. FAU internal deadline is January 5.

The Morris Udall is for sophomores or juniors interested in environmental studies; or Native American/Alaskan sophomores or juniors. The FAU internal deadline is January 31.

The NSEP/Boren is for undergrads to study abroad and work in national security. The FAU internal deadline is January 13.

The James Madison is for seniors or recent graduates for graduate study to teach in history or political science and has a deadline of March 1. The Madison does not require FAU nomination.

"Student Body Art," a photography exhibition of students and their tattoos by visual artist Z. Koppisch, will be on display at the John D. MacArthur Campus Library Gallery. FAU Jupiter, from Thursday, Sept. 13, through Friday, Dec. 14. The photos are from "Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU," a long-term creative collaboration between the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU's Wimberly Library and Karen Leader, Ph.D., of FAU's Department of Visual Arts and Art History. Koppisch, an FAU alumna, is a photographer and senior designer at the Wimberly Library. Students from the Jupiter campus are invited to add their ink to the archive by being photographed and/or videotaped at the reception. FAU's University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters present the "New Art: South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship" exhibition from Saturday, Sept. 22 through Saturday, Dec. 15. The exhibition will be presented in both the Schmidt Center Gallery and the Ritter Art Gallery on the Boca Raton campus,. There will be an opening reception with music and a cash bar on Saturday, September 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Miami-based band Gold Dust Lounge will provide music during the second half of the event at the Ritter Art Gallery.

The exhibition presents 11 artists from Florida's five southeastern counties who have won a highly competitive and generous annual grant awarded by the South Florida Cultural Consortium. This year's South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship winners are Nellie Appleby (Monroe County), Domingo Castillo (Miami Dade), Clifton Childree (Miami Dade), Jiae Hwang (Miami Dade), Nicolas Lobo (Miami Dade), Ernesto Oroza (Miami Dade), Tom Scicluna (Miami Dade), Eric Landes (Broward County), Mark Moormann (Broward County), John Sanchez (Broward County) and Phillip Estlund (Palm Beach County). The artists are selected through a two-step judging process by first a regional panel and then a national panel of visual arts professionals. Over 300 artists apply each year, in part because the grant award for each artist of either $15,000 or $7,500 is among the nation's highest for individual artists.

"Born from Folding: The Art & Science of Origami" is now open at the Wimberly Library in the Boca Raton campus. It is best viewed during daylight hours, when the natural light from the windows of the library lobby streams through the tessellation patterns of the origami on display. Check www.library.fau.edu/geninfo/hours.htm for hours. The Vanessa Gould documentary "Between the Folds" (Green Fuse Films, 2009) is the inspiration for the exhibition. The film explores the artistic importance of origami and then moves on to origami's connections to the world beyond art: to math, to science, to engineering. "All of these paperfolders," Gould says, "artists and scientists alike, whether producing beautiful objects or finding new ways to fold airbags or space telescopes, are involved in a creative effort." Featured origami artists: Christiane Bettens, Philip Chapman-Bell, Joel Cooper, Erik Demaine, Martin Demaine, Lydia Diard, Christine Edison, Melina Hermsen, Andrew Hudson, Peter Keller, Ralf Konrad, Yoshinobu Miyamoto and Matthew Shlian.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details.
