BankAtlantic, including the FAU branch, becomes BB&T today, Oct. 15. The ATMs on campus are being rebranded and all BankAtlantic cards can continue to be used at no charge. Direct deposits, student financial aid deposits and all pre-authorized drafts (bills paid directly from BankAtlantic checking accounts) will post appropriately for a full year from the conversion date -- through October 2013. In the last few days there have had great presentations for National Cyber Security Awareness Month. At the first presentation, Dan Matthews of DELL/SecureWorks talked about mobile devices and the need to ensure that we treat them just like our desktops. Dan explained that we need to lock the devices with a security code as a first line of defense. He warned against "jail breaking" our mobile devices. Jail breaking is when you circumvent the manufacturer's setup and operating system (OS) and basically do your own thing with the security of the device and its OS. October 2012 has been designated National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a consortium consisting of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and partners from federal, state and local government, academia and industry. FAU's department of music in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters celebrates the 10th anniversary of its commercial music program with a public master class from acclaimed composer Charles Strouse on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre on the Boca Raton campus. "The Muslims Are Coming: Racism and the Politics of Empire" -- a public talk by Deepa Kumar, Ph.D., will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Administration Building, Board of Trustees Room (ADM 305). "Islamophobia" became an especially familiar term in the United States following the September 11 attacks. It has been used as much by the left to combat anti-Muslim sentiment or efforts as on the right to attack Muslim-Americans and deny the very existence of what can be identified as Islamophobia.

In an important new book, "Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire" (Haymarket Books, 2012), Deepa Kumar argues that Islamophobia has a long history. In fact, creating anti-Muslim fervor was vital to European and American projects of empire building. "This book is about the image of 'Islam,' that mythical creation conjured out of the needs of empire that has led even progressives to claim that Muslims are more violent than any other religious group," Kumar writes in the introduction. Dr. Kumar is an associate professor of media studies and Middle East studies at Rutgers University.

The Graduate Student Fellowship Opportunities (NIH and NSF) Workshop will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. This workshop will help students develop clear and convincing graduate fellowship proposals. Many colleges and university campuses recognize that cultural diversity is an important issue facing their community. Campus leaders need to take a proactive role in teaching that "different" does not necessarily have a negative connotation. The A CAMPUS OF DIFFERENCE training program can provide students, staff, faculty and administrators with knowledge and skills needed to effectively interact in a culturally diverse campus environment.

The training sessions are designed to:
- Examine stereotypes;
- Expand cultural awareness;
- Explore the value of diversity; and,
- Combat racism, anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry.

The Caring Hearts Auxiliary of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center will host the seventh annual "Keep Memories Alive -- Steppin' to the Oldies, Bobby Socks Optional!" walk affair on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 9 a.m. at the Town Center at Boca Raton. Funds support important programs and services that the center may otherwise may not be able to offer to helping people who are dealing with memory loss and their caregivers. ESSAY CONTEST:
Your Vote, Your Voice 2012, an organization dedicated to voter registration, education and participation on college campuses across the country, brings attention to the fact that in the 2012 Presidential election higher education is a centerpiece of both the Democratic and Republican campaigns. Entrants must write an essay identifying the principle issue(s) that most need to be addressed by the 2012 presidential candidates. Three graduate finalists and three undergraduate finalists will be selected. The top winner from each category will receive a $50 prize disbursed to students' Financial Aid account. The Hertz Foundation Scholarship is for senior or graduate students for graduate work in the physical sciences and has a deadline of November 2.

The Soros is for New American seniors or graduate students for up to 2 years of graduate study with a deadline of November 1. These scholarships do not require FAU nomination.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is for exceptional college students who intend to pursue careers in science, mathematics, or engineering. Students intending to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice. Applicants must be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior with a GPA of at least a B, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. For the 2010-2011 academic year, winners had an average GPA of 3.95. FAU internal deadline is December 15.

The Truman Scholarship is a $30,000 merit based grant awarded to outstanding undergraduate juniors who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. FAU internal deadline is January 5.

The Morris Udall is for sophomores or juniors interested in environmental studies; or Native American/Alaskan sophomores or juniors. The FAU internal deadline is January 31.

The NSEP/Boren is for undergrads to study abroad and work in national security. The FAU internal deadline is January 13.

The James Madison is for seniors or recent graduates for graduate study to teach in history or political science and has a deadline of March 1. The Madison does not require FAU nomination.

"Student Body Art," a photography exhibition of students and their tattoos by visual artist Z. Koppisch, will be on display at the John D. MacArthur Campus Library Gallery. FAU Jupiter, from Thursday, Sept. 13, through Friday, Dec. 14. The photos are from "Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU," a long-term creative collaboration between the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU's Wimberly Library and Karen Leader, Ph.D., of FAU's Department of Visual Arts and Art History. Koppisch, an FAU alumna, is a photographer and senior designer at the Wimberly Library. Students from the Jupiter campus are invited to add their ink to the archive by being photographed and/or videotaped at the reception. The exhibition's hours are Mondays through Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

FAU's University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters present the "New Art: South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship" exhibition from Saturday, Sept. 22 through Saturday, Dec. 15. The exhibition will be presented in both the Schmidt Center Gallery and the Ritter Art Gallery on the Boca Raton campus,. There will be an opening reception with music and a cash bar on Saturday, September 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Miami-based band Gold Dust Lounge will provide music during the second half of the event at the Ritter Art Gallery.

The exhibition presents 11 artists from Florida's five southeastern counties who have won a highly competitive and generous annual grant awarded by the South Florida Cultural Consortium. This year's South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship winners are Nellie Appleby (Monroe County), Domingo Castillo (Miami Dade), Clifton Childree (Miami Dade), Jiae Hwang (Miami Dade), Nicolas Lobo (Miami Dade), Ernesto Oroza (Miami Dade), Tom Scicluna (Miami Dade), Eric Landes (Broward County), Mark Moormann (Broward County), John Sanchez (Broward County) and Phillip Estlund (Palm Beach County). The artists are selected through a two-step judging process by first a regional panel and then a national panel of visual arts professionals. Over 300 artists apply each year, in part because the grant award for each artist of either $15,000 or $7,500 is among the nation's highest for individual artists.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. There is no cost to participate and eligible participants will receive payment for time and travel. If you or someone you know is suffering from Alzheimer's, call 561-297-0164 to learn more.

The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
