Fire Prevention Week is the longest-running public health and safety observance on record -- having been observed since 1925. This year's week is themed "HAVE 2 WAYS OUT" -- focusing on the importance of fire escape planning and practice -- and it will be held from Oct. 7-13.

At FAU, planning for fire emergencies is a vital part of our fire safety program, and we strongly encourage our community members to have a fire escape plan both at work and home that prepares each of us to think fast and get out quickly when a fire alarm or smoke detector is activated. The Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) program, will be offering two training seminars for faculty who are teaching WAC courses this academic year. Space is still available for the second two-day, two-and-a-half hour training is intended for faculty who have not yet participated in a WAC seminar and are teaching, or plan to teach, WAC courses this academic year, and those who are planning or teaching courses in FAU's University Scholars Program. As you may know, FAU formalized its Writing Across Curriculum program in spring 2007. At that time, the Faculty Senate approved a policy that beginning spring 2008, all faculty (including adjuncts and instructors) who teach WAC designated courses "may do so without training, but only for a single semester." Those faculty members must participate in a WAC seminar before teaching another WAC course. If you have not had WAC training at FAU and you are teaching a WAC course this term and intend to teach one again, you must attend one of our 2-day workshops.

After attending the five hours of WAC training, tenure line faculty will receive a $400 stipend. Likewise, instructors will receive a $125 stipend and adjuncts will receive a $100 stipend. All attendees, including graduate assistants, will receive a certificate upon completion of the 2-day seminar.

As we will only be able to accommodate 15 participants in each seminar, we encourage you to register as early as possible. Rachel Manley wil offer a lecture, "Jamaican Independence Fifty Years Later" at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Board of Trustees Room in the Administration Bldg. on the Boca Raton campus. Rachel Manley, as a member of Jamaica's most famous political family, provides a unique inside perspective on decolonization and independence. Her grandfather was leader of Jamaica's first political party and served as the island's Chief Minister during the years leading up to independence. Her grandmother was an accomplished sculptor and founder of the Jamaica School of Art. Her father was perhaps Jamaica's most charismatic and controversial Prime Minister. Things go more or less smoothly until a conflict erupts over the privatization of the water supply. The trouble is that one of the local actors, is a leading activist in the protest movement.

FAU's department of music in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters celebrates the 10th anniversary of its commercial music program with a public master class from acclaimed composer Charles Strouse on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre on the Boca Raton campus. The class, titled "How to prepare for an Audition" and featuring Florida Atlantic University vocalists, is free and open to the public.

Strouse is a three-time Tony Award winner and a two–time Emmy Award winner, and his cast recordings have earned him two Grammy Awards. He has been inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Theatre Hall of Fame. His song "Those Were the Days" launched over 200 episodes of "All in the Family" and continues to reach new generations of television audiences in syndication. "The Muslims Are Coming: Racism and the Politics of Empire" -- a public talk by Deepa Kumar, Ph.D., will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Administration Building, Board of Trustees Room (ADM 305). "Islamophobia" became an especially familiar term in the United States following the September 11 attacks. It has been used as much by the left to combat anti-Muslim sentiment or efforts as on the right to attack Muslim-Americans and deny the very existence of what can be identified as Islamophobia.

In an important new book, "Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire" (Haymarket Books, 2012), Deepa Kumar argues that Islamophobia has a long history. In fact, creating anti-Muslim fervor was vital to European and American projects of empire building. "This book is about the image of 'Islam,' that mythical creation conjured out of the needs of empire that has led even progressives to claim that Muslims are more violent than any other religious group," Kumar writes in the introduction. Dr. Kumar is an associate professor of media studies and Middle East studies at Rutgers University.

Registration is open for "Book Arts 101: Hist Whist," a 3.5-hour introduction immersion book arts course that will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at the Wimberly Library, Boca Raton campus. During this popular Halloween version of the course, John Cutrone, the center's director, will capture the magic of E.E. Cummings' popular children's poem titled "Hist Whist" through the center's Halloween decorations, spooky books and ghost stories. Participants will watch a 25-minute video about the Jaffe Center's collection, use historic wood type to print and bind books using the single signature pamphlet stitch. Cutrone graduated from the MFA in the Book Arts Program at the University of Alabama and is a partner in Lake Worth's Convivio Bookworks, a book arts studio that specializes in limited edition letterpress printed books and broadsides. Your Vote, Your Voice 2012, an organization dedicated to voter registration, education and participation on college campuses across the country, brings attention to the fact that in the 2012 Presidential election higher education is a centerpiece of both the Democratic and Republican campaigns. The George Mitchell Scholarship is for seniors of any discipline for graduate study in Ireland or Northern Ireland and has a deadline of October 2.

The Hertz Foundation Scholarship is for senior or graduate students for graduate work in the physical sciences and has a deadline of November 2.

The Soros is for New American seniors or graduate students for up to 2 years of graduate study with a deadline of November 1. These scholarships do not require FAU nomination.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is for exceptional college students who intend to pursue careers in science, mathematics, or engineering. Students intending to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice. Applicants must be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior with a GPA of at least a B, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. For the 2010-2011 academic year, winners had an average GPA of 3.95. FAU internal deadline is December 15.

The Truman Scholarship is a $30,000 merit based grant awarded to outstanding undergraduate juniors who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. FAU internal deadline is January 5.

The Morris Udall is for sophomores or juniors interested in environmental studies; or Native American/Alaskan sophomores or juniors. The FAU internal deadline is January 31.

The NSEP/Boren is for undergrads to study abroad and work in national security. The FAU internal deadline is January 13.

The James Madison is for seniors or recent graduates for graduate study to teach in history or political science and has a deadline of March 1. The Madison does not require FAU nomination.

"Student Body Art," a photography exhibition of students and their tattoos by visual artist Z. Koppisch, will be on display at the John D. MacArthur Campus Library Gallery. FAU Jupiter, from Thursday, Sept. 13, through Friday, Dec. 14. The photos are from "Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU," a long-term creative collaboration between the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU's Wimberly Library and Karen Leader, Ph.D., of FAU's Department of Visual Arts and Art History. Koppisch, an FAU alumna, is a photographer and senior designer at the Wimberly Library. Students from the Jupiter campus are invited to add their ink to the archive by being photographed and/or videotaped at the reception. FAU's University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters present the "New Art: South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship" exhibition from Saturday, Sept. 22 through Saturday, Dec. 15. The exhibition will be presented in both the Schmidt Center Gallery and the Ritter Art Gallery on the Boca Raton campus,. There will be an opening reception with music and a cash bar on Saturday, September 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Miami-based band Gold Dust Lounge will provide music during the second half of the event at the Ritter Art Gallery.

The exhibition presents 11 artists from Florida's five southeastern counties who have won a highly competitive and generous annual grant awarded by the South Florida Cultural Consortium. This year's South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship winners are Nellie Appleby (Monroe County), Domingo Castillo (Miami Dade), Clifton Childree (Miami Dade), Jiae Hwang (Miami Dade), Nicolas Lobo (Miami Dade), Ernesto Oroza (Miami Dade), Tom Scicluna (Miami Dade), Eric Landes (Broward County), Mark Moormann (Broward County), John Sanchez (Broward County) and Phillip Estlund (Palm Beach County). The artists are selected through a two-step judging process by first a regional panel and then a national panel of visual arts professionals. Over 300 artists apply each year, in part because the grant award for each artist of either $15,000 or $7,500 is among the nation's highest for individual artists.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. There is no cost to participate and eligible participants will receive payment for time and travel. If you or someone you know is suffering from Alzheimer's, call 561-297-0164 to learn more.

The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details.
