Let students know that: Registration for FAU's annual "Semester by the Sea" (SBTS) 2013 program for undergraduate students studying marine biology is open now through Friday, Jan. 11. The STBS program runs Monday, Jan. 7 through Friday, May 3 at FAU's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce. Early registration is strongly recommended, and students from any college or university are welcome to apply. The program provides an unforgettable learning environment that couples small class sizes, hands-on lab instruction and intensive field studies in subtropical marine ecosystems. The recommended program of study consists of three core courses and one elective course. Study topics include: subtropical biodiversity and ecology of seagrasses, reefs, and mangroves; techniques and applications of molecular biology in marine systems; techniques integral to aquaculture of important species; and fundamentals of physical and chemical oceanography. The National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program has released a NASA Cooperative Agreement Notice (CAN) titled Space Grant Innovative Pilot in STEM Education. The announcement is available via the Space Grant website, found at www.nasa.gov/offices/education/programs/national/spacegrant/home.

It is anticipated that up to 10 awards of up to $500,000 each to be expended over a 24-month period of performance may be made.

This solicitation directly focuses on two of those priority areas:
- Undergraduate STEM Education: Improve retention rates, including among groups traditionally underrepresented, in STEM majors during the first two years of undergraduate education.
- Effective K-12 STEM Teacher Education: Increase the number and proportion of individuals, particularly from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, who complete teacher pre-service and in-service programs with an ability to increase students’ understanding of STEM.

Additionally, this solicitation seeks to contribute to Serving Groups Traditionally Underrepresented in STEM Fields - Increase the number of individuals from underrepresented groups that graduate with STEM degrees.

Eligibility
This opportunity is open to all affiliates of the Florida Space Grant Consortium (FSGC) (http://floridaspacegrant.org/about-us/affiliates). FAU is an affiliate member of the Florida Space Consortium and our FAU representative to the Consortium is Dr. Mohammad Ilyas, Interim Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Only two proposals per consortium are permitted to be submitted. In addition, the two proposals from each state require the written concurrence of the state Consortium Director. In order for FSGC to down-select the two proposals for Florida, all interested PI’s from the FSGC affiliates are required to submit a two-page abstract describing the project. The write up should include the target area, a list of partners, and a high level budget. Please note that proposals that seek to serve both target areas will be deemed non-complaint and excluded from award consideration.

Deadline for submitting the two-page abstract is Nov. 12 to fsgc@ucf.edu. An FSGC committee will then down-select the two proposals that will be submitted directly by the Florida institutions to NASA.

The Division of Research is pleased to announce the second year of a University-wide Faculty Research Seed Grant Program to foster increased extramural funding by facilitating the development of innovative research ideas and collaborations that will lead to successful grant applications. A total of $250,000 is available to support this program. However, the number of awards funded will depend on the quality and types of proposals submitted. The maximum award amounts are $20,000 for collaborative awards and $5,000 for individual awards. A principal investigator can qualify for only one award.

The objectives of the seed grant program are to:
- Encourage groups of researchers to collaborate on new avenues of research that otherwise would not be possible if explored independently.
- Assist early stage researchers to establish themselves as independent investigators by facilitating a record of preliminary research that will lead to successful grant applications in the future.
- Support researchers who received favorable reviews for their proposals but were unsuccessful with funding due to recommendations to perform additional research or testing.

On Thursday, Nov. 8, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., there will be a presentation in room CM 133 -- in the Computer Center on the north side of the Wimberly Library -- about the use of Mathematica software for teaching and research in universities. The presentation, which is in support of the University-wide unlimited site license (with free home-use installations for all FAU students, faculty and staff) being funded by a Technology Fee grant, is being given by Troy Schaudt of Wolfram Research, Inc.

The Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present "With Their Voices Raised" on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre, Boca Raton campus. The documentary theatre performance based on stories from 51 survivors of the bombings of Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima. The performance seeks to share the human face of war from the perspective of survivors who came from countries that bombed each other during World War II. In the years after World War II, Americans believed that full participation in the mass consumer society promised widespread prosperity, as well as the long sought goals of a freer and more equal nation. High consumption remained the reigning strategy for achieving a democratic and affluent America until the recent recession, beginning in 2008, raised fundamental questions. Not only do rising home foreclosures and growing personal debt continue to threaten the viability of what the lecturer calls the "Consumers' Republic," but it is not clear how, if not through greater consumption, the United States will work its way out of recession. Can we still consume our way to recovery -- or not?

Hurricane Sandy may have complicated this year's Homecoming festivities, but it wasn't able to blow Fall Family Fest away! The Department of Visual Arts and Art History in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents "Deca," an exhibition featuring works by students graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in visual arts and art history. The exhibition will take place from Friday, Nov. 16 through Friday, Dec. 7 in the Ritter Gallery on the Boca Raton campus. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. "Deca" will showcase artwork by 10 students as the culmination of their undergraduate studio art education at FAU. Barbara Ashbrook, assistant director of the Division of Education Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), will discuss NEH programs and funding opportunities on Monday, Nov. 26, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. (venue TBA). Ashbrook has played a central role in building the agency's programs to support the intellectual development of educators at every level, which remains a primary commitment of the Education division. Barbara has oversight on several grant programs including Landmarks of American History and Culture, Enduring Questions and Bridging Cultures at Community Colleges. She has also had significant involvement in agency-wide initiatives at NEH, with responsibilities for creating new programs in the digital humanities, representing the agency in a multi-year education partnership with Brazil, and attracting corporate support for the launch of EDSITEment. On the evening of Saturday, Dec. 1, the FAU Astronomical Observatory will be celebrating Jupiter's Opposition to the Sun. from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. This will be the last solar opposition for Jupiter until 2014. A planet in opposition means that the Earth will be as close as we can be to the planet for this orbital pass. Throughout the night, we'll get to observe a variety of events that will also occur. Jupiter's moon Io will emerge from behind the planet at 9:53 - 9:57 p.m. and Jupiter's famous Great Red Spot will emerge from its far side at 10:30 pm, will reach mid-transit at 12:37 a.m. and finally return to Jupiter's far side by 2 a.m. While lately "Rose" might be a better descriptive color for it, the Great Red Spot is Jupiter's famous "anti-cyclonic" storm that can be three times the size of the Earth, thus puts any superstorm that we have to shame! The timing of its transit on this particular night will provide an excellent opportunity to see it as well! The presentation that will be provided will provide information about Jupiter and its moons and lead into a discussion about the formation of the solar system, how some of our information about Jupiter conflicts with this formation theory, present newer interesting theories about how it could have occurred and finally a bit about the Juno spacecraft, launched last year to the great planet and which may help answer some of these questions.

A tribute to Ginny Huntzinger, former Interim Assistant Provost of the FAU Lifelong Learning Society (LLS) who passed away this past Spring, will be held on Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. to honor her memory and her many years of dedicated service to LLS. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is for exceptional college students who intend to pursue careers in science, mathematics, or engineering. Students intending to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice. Applicants must be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior with a GPA of at least a B, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. For the 2010-2011 academic year, winners had an average GPA of 3.95. FAU internal deadline is December 15.

The Truman Scholarship is a $30,000 merit based grant awarded to outstanding undergraduate juniors who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. FAU internal deadline is January 5.

The Morris Udall is for sophomores or juniors interested in environmental studies; or Native American/Alaskan sophomores or juniors. The FAU internal deadline is January 31.

The NSEP/Boren is for undergrads to study abroad and work in national security. The FAU internal deadline is January 13.

"Student Body Art," a photography exhibition of students and their tattoos by visual artist Z. Koppisch, will be on display at the John D. MacArthur Campus Library Gallery. The photos are from "Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU," a long-term creative collaboration between the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU's Wimberly Library and Karen Leader, Ph.D., of FAU's Department of Visual Arts and Art History. FAU's University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters present the "New Art: South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship" exhibition from Saturday, Sept. 22 through Saturday, Dec. 15. The exhibition will be presented in both the Schmidt Center Gallery and the Ritter Art Gallery on the Boca Raton campus,. There will be an opening reception with music and a cash bar on Saturday, September 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Miami-based band Gold Dust Lounge will provide music during the second half of the event at the Ritter Art Gallery.

The exhibition presents 11 artists from Florida's five southeastern counties who have won a highly competitive and generous annual grant awarded by the South Florida Cultural Consortium. This year's South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship winners are Nellie Appleby (Monroe County), Domingo Castillo (Miami Dade), Clifton Childree (Miami Dade), Jiae Hwang (Miami Dade), Nicolas Lobo (Miami Dade), Ernesto Oroza (Miami Dade), Tom Scicluna (Miami Dade), Eric Landes (Broward County), Mark Moormann (Broward County), John Sanchez (Broward County) and Phillip Estlund (Palm Beach County). The artists are selected through a two-step judging process by first a regional panel and then a national panel of visual arts professionals. Over 300 artists apply each year, in part because the grant award for each artist of either $15,000 or $7,500 is among the nation's highest for individual artists.

The film explores the artistic importance of origami and then moves on to origami's connections to the world beyond art: to math, to science, to engineering. "All of these paperfolders," Gould says, "artists and scientists alike, whether producing beautiful objects or finding new ways to fold airbags or space telescopes, are involved in a creative effort." Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you.
