The College of Engineering & Computer Science is offering two Summer Engineering Technology camps in June for students in Broward and Palm Beach counties who are entering the 8th and 9th grade as of fall 2012. FAU has installed a lightning prediction system manufactured by Thor Guard, Inc., at its Boca Raton campus in order to warn athletes, participants and spectators at outdoor athletic and campus recreation facilities when a danger of a lightning strike exists. Unlike lightning detection systems, which require the occurrence of an actual lightning strike before issuing a warning, the Thor Guard system is able to predict so-called "bolts out of the blue," which are strikes that seem to come from nowhere and cause a high percentage of lightning fatalities. The system is set to operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The Thor Guard system is designed to predict a lightning strike within a defined area and provide a "RED ALERT" consisting of audible and visual warnings approximately 8 to 20 minutes before lightning strikes are experienced within that region. When pre-established detection limits are reached, the system activates a number of horns and strobe lights located on campus near outdoor athletic fields, campus recreation fields and swimming pools, warning those who are outside to seek shelter.

When conditions for a lightning strike exist, the system will give a 15-second blast on the horn cluster and a yellow strobe will activate and stay on until the danger has passed. Once the potential for a lightning strike has passed, the system will activate the horns for an all-clear signal -- three short (5-second) blasts -- and the strobe light will stop blinking.

If the Thor Guard lightning prediction system activates or a lightning strike danger is otherwise indicated, seek shelter inside a nearby building or a fully enclosed metal vehicle. Do not seek shelter under towers, trees or tall objects that could attract a lightning strike. Once inside a vehicle do not touch any metal that could be part of the vehicle frame. If you are working with an outdoor group, suspend activities and guide your participants inside.

Firewalls provide protection against outside attackers by shielding computers or networks from malicious or unnecessary Internet traffic. Firewalls can be configured to block data from certain locations while allowing the relevant and necessary data to come through. (see Understanding Denial-of-Service Attacks and Understanding Hidden Threats: Rootkits and Botnets for more information). Firewalls are especially important for users who rely on "always on" connections such as cable or DSL modems.

FAU has many of its servers behind a firewall to protect them and the services that they provide. It is because of the firewall that if you BYOD, "Bring Your On Device" -- for example, a laptop computer -- on campus and want to connect it to the network that you must first log onto the network (a.k.a., authenticating). It is also because of the FAU firewall that you cannot automatically use Remote Desktop from home to connect to your campus computer.

"Forty percent of the nation's sea-level rise risk is in Florida," Ben Strauss, Climate Central. The organizing committee welcomes submissions of brief abstracts for posters to be presented from 1:30 to 3 p.m., on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, as part of the pre-Summit activities for the "Risk and Response: Sea-Level Rise Summit." Projections, even for the short-range future, suggest a steadily growing threat to Florida's infrastructure and ecological treasures. Salt-water intrusion into coastal aquifers, failure of vital drainage canals and periodic flooding at high tides are already newspaper headlines. This summit will focus on the complex sea-level rise issues in Florida and provide examples from other coastal regions within the U.S. and internationally.

We invite and encourage you to consider creating/presenting a poster to showcase your research, best case practices, adaptation/mitigation efforts, and education and outreach efforts to engage local governments and agencies, scientists, and the general public. We are seeking a variety of poster topics, particularly those that match the conference themes and relate to Florida and sea-level rise:

The Undergraduate Research Journal (URJ) at Florida Atlantic University is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that is to be published annually. In order to support faculty and increase access to and enrollment in eLearning, the Center for eLearning requests faculty proposals for eLearning course development and delivery. Faculty selected in this process will receive a stipend of $3,000 to:
- Complete a training program and develop an online course during the fall of 2012
- Teach the newly developed course as an overload at least once by the end of fall 2013. The overload instruction rate will be $6,000 for full-time faculty and $4,500 for part-time faculty.

The fall program consists of 6 units delivered over 11 weeks during fall 2012 and includes 3 face-to-face meetings scheduled on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The remaining coursework will be completed online. To be successful in this course, we estimate that you will need to commit to 12 hours of work per week. Faculty can also receive up to 6 hours of individual assistance from instructional designers. Open lab hours with instructional designers will also be available.

Participants will need to confirm their working knowledge of Blackboard via two assessments prior to beginning the program. Instructions for these assessments and information on how to prepare for them will be forwarded to the selected candidates.

Proposals will be reviewed and priority given to:
1. High demand courses with consistent enrollment demand over the last three years including summers
2. Courses that are deemed strategic in planning eLearning degree programs
3. Courses that are part of an existing eLearning plan within your College/School/Department.

FAU's Astronomical Observatory will hold an "on-campus expedition" to observe the very rare Transit of Venus across the face of the Sun on Tuesday, June 5, from 6 p.m. until after sundown. All are invited to come to this free event to witness it for themselves. The transit will not occur again for another 105 years, so no one alive today will see it again! Astronomers have used these events to figure out the distance from the Earth to the Sun, and this information told us the distances to the stars. FAU's Center for Environmental Studies within the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science will host a "Risk and Response: Sea Level Rise Summit" on Wednesday, June 20 from 1:30 to 5 p.m., as well as on Thursday, June 21 and Friday, June 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Boca Raton Marriott. The purpose of the summit is to share the ongoing responses and adaptation planning of agencies, institutions and civic society to sea level rise and compare the Florida situation and response with other vulnerable localities in the U.S. and worldwide.

South Florida is one of the world's most vulnerable areas to climate change, especially sea level rise. The potential adaptation to sea level rise is complicated by the porous limestone geology of the region, permitting salt water intrusion into important aquifers. The low-level terrain in many areas makes even a relatively small sea level rise problematic.

Domestic Duality, a free exhibition of self-portraits by Patricia Gutierrez runs Friday, May 25, through Friday, Aug. 10, at the FAU Jupiter Library Gallery. Patricia Schnall Gutierrez, the artist, has dedicated her work to examining women's roles throughout her career. Whether you call them pop-up books or moveable books, there's no doubt that books with elements that pop up, slide, twirl and change before your eyes are just plain fun. And fun is the general idea behind this great collection of books recently given to FAU Libraries by Arthur J. Williams. The Arthur J. Williams Pop-Up Collection is comprised of 425 pop-up and moveable books, and the collection has found a perfect home at FAU Libraries' Jaffe Center for Book Arts, where it is permanently housed, enabling students and researchers an opportunity to study the mechanics of pop-ups. The exhibition is displayed in the Jaffe Center for Book Arts and throughout the rest of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
