On Tuesday, May 15, testing of the horns and strobes for the lightning hazard prediction system on the Boca Raton campus will occur between 11 and 11:45 a.m. The warning horns and strobe lights will be heard and seen at various places around campus as testing of the system occurs. Please note these horns are not associated with the current outdoor warning sirens in place on the Boca Raton campus, and no action is required during the testing. FAU ranks 13th in the nation for conferring master's and doctoral degrees in business/management/marketing on to Hispanic students, according to a new survey reported in the latest issue of The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine, a national bi-weekly publication for the higher education community. Rankings are based on degrees conferred during the 2010-11 academic year and findings from a survey by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics' Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Set. The most interesting finding that Hispanic Outlook highlights is the gains Hispanic women have made in the number of degrees conferred in relation to their male counterparts. For FAU last year, Hispanics accounted for 15 percent of total students who earned a graduate degree in the business/management/marketing majors. Of that amount, 52 percent were men and 48 percent were women. FAU ranked 28th in the nation in this category in the 2009-10 academic year.

FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science student Christina Zarrilli has been named the Technology Student Leader of the Year by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. She was nominated for the award by ITWomen, a volunteer-based not-for-profit organization that helps advance women in IT and technology related fields in South Florida. Zarrilli is a member of the College's Innovation Leadership Honors program and a junior majoring in ocean engineering. She is an active volunteer, logging more than 4,500 hours of service with the Civil Air Patrol, the FAU Service Learning Board, the Society of Women Engineers and at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Boca Raton. Firewalls provide protection against outside attackers by shielding computers or networks from malicious or unnecessary Internet traffic. Firewalls can be configured to block data from certain locations while allowing the relevant and necessary data to come through. (see Understanding Denial-of-Service Attacks and Understanding Hidden Threats: Rootkits and Botnets for more information). Firewalls are especially important for users who rely on "always on" connections such as cable or DSL modems.

FAU has many of its servers behind a firewall to protect them and the services that they provide. It is because of the firewall that if you BYOD, "Bring Your On Device" -- for example, a laptop computer -- on campus and want to connect it to the network that you must first log onto the network (a.k.a., authenticating). It is also because of the FAU firewall that you cannot automatically use Remote Desktop from home to connect to your campus computer.

"Forty percent of the nation's sea-level rise risk is in Florida," Ben Strauss, Climate Central. The organizing committee welcomes submissions of brief abstracts for posters to be presented from 1:30 to 3 p.m., on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, as part of the pre-Summit activities for the "Risk and Response: Sea-Level Rise Summit." Projections, even for the short-range future, suggest a steadily growing threat to Florida's infrastructure and ecological treasures. Salt-water intrusion into coastal aquifers, failure of vital drainage canals and periodic flooding at high tides are already newspaper headlines. This summit will focus on the complex sea-level rise issues in Florida and provide examples from other coastal regions within the U.S. and internationally.

We invite and encourage you to consider creating/presenting a poster to showcase your research, best case practices, adaptation/mitigation efforts, and education and outreach efforts to engage local governments and agencies, scientists, and the general public. We are seeking a variety of poster topics, particularly those that match the conference themes and relate to Florida and sea-level rise:

The Undergraduate Research Journal (URJ) at Florida Atlantic University is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that is to be published annually. In order to support faculty and increase access to and enrollment in eLearning, the Center for eLearning requests faculty proposals for eLearning course development and delivery. Faculty selected in this process will receive a stipend of $3,000 to:
- Complete a training program and develop an online course during the fall of 2012
- Teach the newly developed course as an overload at least once by the end of fall 2013. The overload instruction rate will be $6,000 for full-time faculty and $4,500 for part-time faculty.

The fall program consists of 6 units delivered over 11 weeks during fall 2012 and includes 3 face-to-face meetings scheduled on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The remaining coursework will be completed online. To be successful in this course, we estimate that you will need to commit to 12 hours of work per week. Faculty can also receive up to 6 hours of individual assistance from instructional designers. Open lab hours with instructional designers will also be available.

Participants will need to confirm their working knowledge of Blackboard via two assessments prior to beginning the program. Instructions for these assessments and information on how to prepare for them will be forwarded to the selected candidates.

Proposals will be reviewed and priority given to:
1. High demand courses with consistent enrollment demand over the last three years including summers
2. Courses that are deemed strategic in planning eLearning degree programs
3. Courses that are part of an existing eLearning plan within your College/School/Department.

And fun is the general idea behind this great collection of books recently given to FAU Libraries by Arthur J. Williams. The Arthur J. Williams Pop-Up Collection is comprised of 425 pop-up and moveable books, and the collection has found a perfect home at FAU Libraries' Jaffe Center for Book Arts, where it is permanently housed, enabling students and researchers an opportunity to study the mechanics of pop-ups. The exhibition is displayed in the Jaffe Center for Book Arts and throughout the rest of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you.
