The Office of Information Technology will perform updates to campus network and internet infrastructure on Friday, May 11, from 1 to 6:30 a.m. These updates are intended to improve the reliability and performance of the FAU network prior to the start of summer classes. While upgrades are performed, network access within the FAU campus, to the internet and between the Boca Raton campus and other campuses will be intermittent. Please be aware that services such as web pages, Exchange email and MyFAU will be unavailable from time to time during the maintenance.

Be advised that calls between campuses as well as off-campus calls may require dialing a seven- or ten-digit number. In case of emergency during this period, please dial 911 or contact the FAU Police Department at 561-271-5163.

FAU will complete final installation of a lightning hazard prediction system on the Boca Raton campus on Monday, May 14. Then, on Tuesday, May 15, testing of the system's horns and strobes will occur between 11 and 11:45 a.m. The warning horns and strobe lights will be heard and seen at various places around campus as testing of the system occurs. Please note these horns are not associated with the current outdoor warning sirens in place on the Boca Raton campus, and no action is required during the testing. Firewalls provide protection against outside attackers by shielding computers or networks from malicious or unnecessary Internet traffic. Firewalls can be configured to block data from certain locations while allowing the relevant and necessary data to come through. (see Understanding Denial-of-Service Attacks and Understanding Hidden Threats: Rootkits and Botnets for more information). Firewalls are especially important for users who rely on "always on" connections such as cable or DSL modems.

FAU has many of its servers behind a firewall to protect them and the services that they provide. It is because of the firewall that if you BYOD, "Bring Your On Device" -- for example, a laptop computer -- on campus and want to connect it to the network that you must first log onto the network (a.k.a., authenticating). It is also because of the FAU firewall that you cannot automatically use Remote Desktop from home to connect to your campus computer.

Do you have a firewall on your home system? Check your MS Windows system to see if your firewall is enabled (MS Instructions). Also check with your Internet, cable or DSL provider to see if your equipment is protected.

"Forty percent of the nation's sea-level rise risk is in Florida," Ben Strauss, Climate Central. The organizing committee welcomes submissions of brief abstracts for posters to be presented from 1:30 to 3 p.m., on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, as part of the pre-Summit activities for the "Risk and Response: Sea-Level Rise Summit." Projections, even for the short-range future, suggest a steadily growing threat to Florida's infrastructure and ecological treasures. Salt-water intrusion into coastal aquifers, failure of vital drainage canals and periodic flooding at high tides are already newspaper headlines. This summit will focus on the complex sea-level rise issues in Florida and provide examples from other coastal regions within the U.S. and internationally.

We invite and encourage you to consider creating/presenting a poster to showcase your research, best case practices, adaptation/mitigation efforts, and education and outreach efforts to engage local governments and agencies, scientists, and the general public. We are seeking a variety of poster topics, particularly those that match the conference themes and relate to Florida and sea-level rise:

The Undergraduate Research Journal (URJ) at Florida Atlantic University is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that is to be published annually. In order to support faculty and increase access to and enrollment in eLearning, the Center for eLearning requests faculty proposals for eLearning course development and delivery. Faculty selected in this process will receive a stipend of $3,000 to:
- Complete a training program and develop an online course during the fall of 2012
- Teach the newly developed course as an overload at least once by the end of fall 2013. The overload instruction rate will be $6,000 for full-time faculty and $4,500 for part-time faculty.

The fall program consists of 6 units delivered over 11 weeks during fall 2012 and includes 3 face-to-face meetings scheduled on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The remaining coursework will be completed online. To be successful in this course, we estimate that you will need to commit to 12 hours of work per week. Faculty can also receive up to 6 hours of individual assistance from instructional designers. Open lab hours with instructional designers will also be available.

Participants will need to confirm their working knowledge of Blackboard via two assessments prior to beginning the program. Instructions for these assessments and information on how to prepare for them will be forwarded to the selected candidates.

Proposals will be reviewed and priority given to:
1. High demand courses with consistent enrollment demand over the last three years including summers
2. Courses that are deemed strategic in planning eLearning degree programs
3. Courses that are part of an existing eLearning plan within your College/School/Department.

FAU's University Galleries will host a series of public programs to mark the closing of the Surfing Florida: A Photographic History exhibition on Saturday, May 12, from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Schmidt Center Gallery, Boca Raton campus. The event will include slide shows, a film screening, lecture and music. The slide shows will be presented by photographers John Tate and Nic Lugo. Tate, a Broward County native, has been photographing surfing in Florida since the early 1970s. Lugo is a younger photographer who specializes in water photography, often getting close-up images of surfers enveloped "in the tube" in both local and international waters.

Following the slide shows, FAU associate professor and ethnomusicologist, James E. Cunningham, Ph.D., will present a lecture titled "Surf Rock and the Music of the 'Right' Coast" on the history and several revivals and revisions of surf music from the 1950s to the present. The presentation will focus on connections between successive "waves" of surf rock popularity and Floridian instrumental and vocal surf-rock traditions.

The event includes a screening of "Surfing at Summers End," a film by Will Lucas that is a compilation of several older surfers' descriptions of the early days of surfing and the importance of surfing in their lives. Lucas, who will be present for the screening, constructs his historical documentaries with vintage 8mm film, still photographs and contemporary interviews. Since 2003, Lucas has made four films under his Surf 64 label that fill a strong nostalgia niche for aging surfers, but are also contributing to a current trend to preserve and digitize surf history often held on aging and brittle film stock.

DJ Lance O of Kulcha Shok Productions will conclude the exhibition closing event from 6 to 8 p.m. by spinning reggae and surf tunes. A cash bar will also be available. Kulcha Shok appears throughout Florida’s coastal communities, often at surf contests and events, and has a following among several generations of surfers. In addition, Lance O is a founding member of the Miami Surf Archive Project, one of several organizations in the state that are working to preserve surf history.

"Surfing Florida" is an exhibition documenting the nearly 100-year history of surfing and surf culture in Florida through photographs by more than 60 photographers; media stations including excerpts of Hollywood films like "Gidget," interviews with numerous important Florida surfers, and many core surf films. The exhibition also includes a collection of more than 50 surfboards -- from a 1930s-era Tom Blake hollow board to a contemporary board by shaper Matt Kechele whose 1979 "Kech-Airs" were the first successful forays into the most progressive phenomena in today's surfing, aerial surfing.

The University Galleries is presenting the landmark exhibition "Surfing Florida: A Photographic History" through Saturday, May 12. Williams Pop-Up Collection is comprised of 425 pop-up and moveable books, and the collection has found a perfect home at FAU Libraries' Jaffe Center for Book Arts, where it is permanently housed, enabling students and researchers an opportunity to study the mechanics of pop-ups. The exhibition is displayed in the Jaffe Center for Book Arts and throughout the rest of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
