Dr. Howard Weiner will accept the honorary doctorate on his father's behalf.

- Friday, May 4, at 1 p.m.: Graduates from the College of Education and the College of Engineering and Computer Science. At this ceremony Mr. Jaime Borras '74, '81 will be inducted into the FAU National Alumni Association Hall of Fame. A pioneer and innovator in the wireless telecommunications industry who holds 42 United States utility patents, Mr. Borras is chief executive officer of WSG (Wireless Silicon Group) Inc., a Florida-based consulting firm.

Because of the need to accommodate all of the graduates and their guests, admission is by ticket only. The ceremonies are held in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Center located in the Student Union on the Boca Raton campus. Firewalls provide protection against outside attackers by shielding computers or networks from malicious or unnecessary Internet traffic. Firewalls can be configured to block data from certain locations while allowing the relevant and necessary data to come through. (see Understanding Denial-of-Service Attacks and Understanding Hidden Threats: Rootkits and Botnets for more information). Firewalls are especially important for users who rely on "always on" connections such as cable or DSL modems.

FAU has many of its servers behind a firewall to protect them and the services that they provide. It is because of the firewall that if you BYOD, "Bring Your On Device" -- for example, a laptop computer -- on campus and want to connect it to the network that you must first log onto the network (a.k.a., authenticating). It is also because of the FAU firewall that you cannot automatically use Remote Desktop from home to connect to your campus computer.

In order to support faculty and increase access to and enrollment in eLearning, the Center for eLearning requests faculty proposals for eLearning course development and delivery. Faculty selected in this process will receive a stipend of $3,000 to:
- Complete a training program and develop an online course during the fall of 2012
- Teach the newly developed course as an overload at least once by the end of fall 2013. The overload instruction rate will be $6,000 for full-time faculty and $4,500 for part-time faculty.

The fall program consists of 6 units delivered over 11 weeks during fall 2012 and includes 3 face-to-face meetings scheduled on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The remaining coursework will be completed online. To be successful in this course, we estimate that you will need to commit to 12 hours of work per week. Faculty can also receive up to 6 hours of individual assistance from instructional designers. Open lab hours with instructional designers will also be available.

Participants will need to confirm their working knowledge of Blackboard via two assessments prior to beginning the program. Instructions for these assessments and information on how to prepare for them will be forwarded to the selected candidates.

Proposals will be reviewed and priority given to:
1. High demand courses with consistent enrollment demand over the last three years including summers
2. Courses that are deemed strategic in planning eLearning degree programs
3. Courses that are part of an existing eLearning plan within your College/School/Department.

Arthur Jaffe, founder of the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU Libraries, and Karen Leader, Ph.D., FAU's department of visual arts and art history, are hosting the first preview screening of the film "Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU," on Sunday, May 6, at 3 p.m. at the Jaffe Center, which is on the third floor east of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus. "Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU," a collaboration between the Jaffe Center and Leader, is designed to engage FAU's students in an exploration of the social, cultural and artistic phenomenon of tattooing. FAU's University Galleries will host a series of public programs to mark the closing of the Surfing Florida: A Photographic History exhibition on Saturday, May 12, from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Schmidt Center Gallery, Boca Raton campus. The event will include slide shows, a film screening, lecture and music. The slide shows will be presented by photographers John Tate and Nic Lugo. Tate, a Broward County native, has been photographing surfing in Florida since the early 1970s. Lugo is a younger photographer who specializes in water photography, often getting close-up images of surfers enveloped "in the tube" in both local and international waters.

Following the slide shows, FAU associate professor and ethnomusicologist, James E. Cunningham, Ph.D., will present a lecture titled "Surf Rock and the Music of the 'Right' Coast" on the history and several revivals and revisions of surf music from the 1950s to the present. The presentation will focus on connections between successive "waves" of surf rock popularity and Floridian instrumental and vocal surf-rock traditions.

The event includes a screening of "Surfing at Summers End," a film by Will Lucas that is a compilation of several older surfers' descriptions of the early days of surfing and the importance of surfing in their lives. Lucas, who will be present for the screening, constructs his historical documentaries with vintage 8mm film, still photographs and contemporary interviews. Since 2003, Lucas has made four films under his Surf 64 label that fill a strong nostalgia niche for aging surfers, but are also contributing to a current trend to preserve and digitize surf history often held on aging and brittle film stock.

DJ Lance O of Kulcha Shok Productions will conclude the exhibition closing event from 6 to 8 p.m. by spinning reggae and surf tunes. A cash bar will also be available. Kulcha Shok appears throughout Florida’s coastal communities, often at surf contests and events, and has a following among several generations of surfers. In addition, Lance O is a founding member of the Miami Surf Archive Project, one of several organizations in the state that are working to preserve surf history.

"Surfing Florida" is an exhibition documenting the nearly 100-year history of surfing and surf culture in Florida through photographs by more than 60 photographers; media stations including excerpts of Hollywood films like "Gidget," interviews with numerous important Florida surfers, and many core surf films. The exhibition also includes a collection of more than 50 surfboards -- from a 1930s-era Tom Blake hollow board to a contemporary board by shaper Matt Kechele whose 1979 "Kech-Airs" were the first successful forays into the most progressive phenomena in today's surfing, aerial surfing.

"What Feminism Means to Me," a free exhibition of art and poetry that explores interconnectedness, empowerment, abuse, gender stereotypes and expectations, is on display at the Wimberly Library, first floor west, through Friday, May 4. The Women's Studies Graduate Student Association and MFA students in the Department of Visual Arts and Art History are sponsoring the exhibition in honor of Women's History Month. The John D. MacArthur Campus Library is hosting "Here and There," a series of evocative images by Kristen O. Murtaugh, through Friday, May 11, at the John D. MacArthur Campus Library Gallery. Dr. Murtaugh retired from FAU in 2010 after 18 years or service. The exhibition draws viewers into private worlds and quiet public spaces and features black and white as well as color images that focus on form, pattern and texture. The University Galleries is presenting the landmark exhibition "Surfing Florida: A Photographic History" through Saturday, May 12. The exhibition has been developed for the past three years by University Galleries Director W. Rod Faulds and Paul Aho, the exhibition's curator, a lifelong Florida surfer and head of photography and digital imaging at the Paducah School of Art. Surfing Florida employs "media stations" to present film, video, music and interviews with historic surfers. Whether you call them pop-up books or moveable books, there's no doubt that books with elements that pop up, slide, twirl and change before your eyes are just plain fun. And fun is the general idea behind this great collection of books recently given to FAU Libraries by Arthur J. Williams. The Arthur J. Williams Pop-Up Collection is comprised of 425 pop-up and moveable books, and the collection has found a perfect home at FAU Libraries' Jaffe Center for Book Arts, where it is permanently housed, enabling students and researchers an opportunity to study the mechanics of pop-ups. The exhibition is displayed in the Jaffe Center for Book Arts and throughout the rest of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. There is no cost to participate and eligible participants will receive payment for time and travel. If you or someone you know is suffering from Alzheimer's, call 561-297-0164 to learn more.

The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
