Dr. Gitanjali Kaul, Vice President for Strategic Planning and Information Technology, is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert Seltzer has been named Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management. He earned his Ph.D. in psychology and education from the University of Michigan. Dr. Seltzer comes to FAU with 20 years of experience in enrollment management, serving most recently as the special assistant for enrollment management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Seltzer joins FAU on April 2.

Volusia Street is now closed between West University Drive and FAU Arena on the Boca Raton campus. The closure is necessary for the installation of new street lighting. For those requiring access to the buildings and parking lots west of West University Drive please use the parking lot 15 and 10 access roads. Detour signs and officers will be on hand to assist with traffic direction. The roadway will be reopened for the start of business on Monday, March 26.

In order to better align with the services provided, Information Resources Management (IRM) was renamed the Office of Information Technology (OIT) effective March 12. Submissions are now being accepted for two employee recognition awards listed below. The awards will be presented at the Employee Service Awards on April 18 (see listing under "Save the Date").

The VALIC Serving U Customer Service Award emphasizes and highlights an FAU employee's commitment to provide top-quality customer service in all situations. The award recognizes employees who have made exceptional contributions, exceeding normal expectations, to further the University's mission by delivering services of superior quality to external or internal customers, partners and/or stakeholders. Nominations for the award may be made by superiors, peers or subordinates in the University's employment hierarchy. Nominations will be accepted in the following categories: SP employees and AMP employees. Two VALIC Serving U Customer Service Awards will be presented. Self-nominations are acceptable and multiple nominations for an employee are also welcome. All nominations will be reviewed by the VALIC Serving U Awards Committee. Temporary employees are not eligible for nomination.

The VALIC Serving U Award Committee is comprised of three University representatives appointed by the Director of Human Resources. The committee will screen nominations and select the recipients for the VALIC Serving U Awards, which will be presented at the Employee Service Awards ceremony on April 18. Each employee honored will receive $1,200 (less taxes) and a framed award certificate. A full description of this award, its criteria and nomination forms may be accessed at www.fau.edu/ServingU. Nominations must be submitted to James Acton, Director of Human Resources, by Friday, March 30.

The Gabor Award recognizes two employees each year for their exemplary service to FAU in the performance of their specific jobs. The following employee classes are eligible: Administrative, Managerial and Professional (AMP) and Support Personnel (SP). Selections will be made based on the strength of the nominations received regardless of the employee class. Faculty members are not eligible for this award. AMP and SP employees are eligible for award consideration providing that they have been employed by the University for at least one continuous year. The employees selected will each be given a monetary award of $1,200 (before taxes) and a special plaque.

Deans and Directors must submit written recommendations to their respective Chief Administrative Officers. Each recommendation must be justified based on one of the following criteria:
1. Specific dollar savings
2. Improved efficiency in operations
3. Program improvement through new program implementation or program enhancement of existing standards
The Chief Administrative Officers will submit their two finalists for consideration by the Jeffrey Gabor Award Selection Committee for final review and selection of the winners. The selected winners will be announced at the annual Employee Service Awards Ceremony on April 18. Monetary awards and plaques will be presented at that time.

Funds for these awards have been provided by the Gabor Agency, Inc. The intent is to establish a permanent endowment to honor exemplary FAU employees each year. All nominations must be received by Friday, March 30. Send nominations to Ed Rowe, Equal Opportunity Programs, AD 265.

The Writing Across the Curriculum Program at FAU is accepting proposals for its Department Development Grants of $2,000, available on a competitive basis to faculty teams who plan to integrate effective writing activities and assignments throughout their departments' curricula. The deadline has now been extended to Friday, April 6. In addition, departments that are considering developing honors programs within their curriculum might consider applying for a WAC Departmental Development Grant.

Successful grants will:
- Involve at least three faculty from a department
- Present a clear plan for long-term curriculum change
- Collaborate with the University WAC Director and Assistant Director
- Provide a justified budget (excluding funds for equipment, travel support or food)

Proposal Guidelines:
Step 1. Arrange a required pre-proposal meeting with the WAC Director, Jeff Galin (jgalin@fau.edu).
Step 2. Prepare a proposal for a Department Development Grant (3 to 5 pages). Include the following items:
1. Potential impact (need, benefits for students, number of students benefited)
2. Project objectives
3. Project Plan (including plans for working with the Center's staff)
4. Assessment strategy
5. Team members
6. Schedule
7. Budget
8. Commitment to writing a report and making a presentation to the University community
9. Signature of department chair

Examples that are likely to receive funding include:
1. Converting a multi-section course to a WAC course
2. Introductory level course for all students entering a major
3. Critical thinking initiatives that use case-based writing projects
4. Assessment project that determines the effectiveness of a WAC component of departmental curricula
5. Integrating writing into a series of courses

FAU will host an undergraduate research symposium on the Boca Raton campus on Friday, April 6, in the Live Oak Pavilion. Undergraduate Studies would like to have broad representation in the symposium from every College. In addition to poster sessions and art/video showings, panels will be organized around broad themes or areas of inquiry.

The Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award was established to recognize and encourage outstanding mentoring of graduate students. Recipients of the award are members of the Graduate Faculty with extraordinary records of excellence and effectiveness with regard to graduate mentoring. The recipient receives a plaque, university-wide recognition, and $1,000. Support for this award comes from the Graduate College. Dr. Wilfried Prewo, chief executive of Hannover Chamber of Industry and Commerce will offer "Can the Euro Survive?" on Thursday, March 22, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the House Chambers, Student Union, Boca Raton campus, with a reception to follow.

The Euro crisis, now in its third year, is still not solved. The attempts to contain the crisis with financial aid packages were insufficient. The Euro countries took steps in late Fall 2011 towards a fiscal union and binding fiscal discipline. But survival of the Euro will also require the European Central Bank to expand its role and become a lender of last resort. The Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Hannover is one of the five largest chambers in Germany. In the international area, the chamber is the primary advisor to companies on exports and investment abroad, and organizes trade missions. Dr. Prewo has a B.A. from Grinnell College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Johns Hopkins University. He taught at the University of Texas at Austin and worked in financial services before assuming his current position. Dr. Prewo is also founding president of Leibniz-Fachhochschule - Leibniz School of Business. The Lifelong Learning Society Jupiter will present "LUNAFEST: Short Films By, For, About Women" on Thursday, March 22, at 6 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Society complex at FAU Jupiter. The unique film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through nine short films by female filmmakers. The films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women's health, motherhood, body image, aging, cultural diversity and breaking barriers. All proceeds from LUNAFEST will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund, the leading national organization working to identify and eliminate the environmental causes of breast cancer, and a scholarship for a student attending classes on FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus. LUNAFEST, which is created and funded by LUNA, the maker of whole nutrition bars for women, Established in 2000, the film festival has raised more than $456,000 for Breast Cancer Fund and more than $785,000 for other women's non-profit organizations.

The 2012 Social Science Forum on Twenty-first Century Controversies presents a free screening of an important and timely documentary examining the environmental impact of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas on March 22 at 7:30 p.m. in University Theatre on the Boca Raton campus. FAU Libraries will host art historian Marilyn Becker, who will present a visual and lecture presentation titled "The Legacy of Jewish Art & Artists," on Sunday, April 1, at 3 p.m., in the Wimberly Library's fifth floor performance space on the Boca Raton campus. Becker's lecture, which is sponsored by the Jewish Cultural Society (JCS) at FAU, will give an overview of the role of Jewish artists from some of the earliest examples in history to the modern era. Among the artists that Becker will discuss are French impressionist Camille Pissarro, Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, German-born British painter Lucian Freud and Russian-American abstract expressionist Marc Rothko. Becker, an adjunct professor at Palm Beach State College, is the author of "The How-to-Read & How-to-Write About Art Handbook." It is time once again for the annual FAU Employee Service Awards Ceremony. This year's awards will be held on Wednesday, April 18, in the Live Oak Pavilion on the Boca Raton campus.

The University will recognize completed years of service for regular full-time and part-time employees with continued and completed service of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 45 years at FAU as of 2011.

Please observe these very important points:
- Temporary and adjunct years of service do not apply toward years of service.
- Only employment years working for FAU apply.
- Other State of Florida service or State University System service cannot be added to years of service at FAU.
- Service must be continuous, with no break in service years.
- Service is calculated in "completed" years of service as of Dec. 31, 2011.

Employees celebrating 5 through 15 years of service will not be called up individually for recognition but will be recognized respectfully in groups. Their awards will be available for pick-up at the ceremony.

Employees with 20 through 45 years of service will be called up individually to receive their awards. The electronic check-in for 20-year through 45-year recipients will commence at 8:30 a.m., and refreshments will be served at that time. The program will start at approximately 9:30 a.m.

The University will also acknowledge winners of this year's President's Leadership Awards, Jeffrey Gabor Exemplary Employee Awards, the TIAA CREF Faculty Award and the VALIC Customer Service Award.

FAU is offering the Summer Science Institute -- a four-week non-credit academic program specifically designed for high-achieving middle and high school students interested in discovering the world of science. The Jafee Center for Book Arts, housed in the Winberly Library, is offering Transfer Processes for Book Artists March 24 or 25. Tuition is for the $135 general public; $120 FAU faculty & staff, students from other institutions; $105 FAU students In this one-day workshop participants will create a 7" x 5" artists' book with metal covers and learn two different inkjet print transfer methods.

"What Feminism Means to Me," a free exhibition of art and poetry that explores interconnectedness, empowerment, abuse, gender stereotypes and expectations, is on display at the Wimberly Library, first floor west, through Friday, May 4. The Women's Studies Graduate Student Association and MFA students in the Department of Visual Arts and Art History are sponsoring the exhibition in honor of Women's History Month. FAU Libraries are hosting "Highlights from the Davis Collection," an exhibition of rare title pages, music scores, books, greeting cards and other music-related materials by renowned composers and publishers from the Richard Beattie Davis Collection through April 7 at the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus. The collection was established by Davis in 1984 and consists largely of first and early editions of scores from the early 1790s to the first two decades of the 20th century. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is in the atrium lobby and on the second floor outside of the administration offices. The University Galleries will present the landmark exhibition, "Surfing Florida: A Photographic History," beginning Saturday, March 17 through Saturday, May 12. The exhibition has been developed for the past three years by University Galleries Director W. Rod Faulds and Paul Aho, the exhibition's curator, a lifelong Florida surfer and head of photography and digital imaging at the Paducah School of Art. A series of programs and events will take place the opening weekend beginning Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17. Surfing Florida will employ "media stations" to present film, video, music and interviews with historic surfers. Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Are you currently taking an antidepressant and experiencing sexual side effects? Clinical Research Studies at the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research study to better understand the effects of an investigational antidepressant medication on sexual functioning when compared with an approved medication. We are currently enrolling individuals who are taking Celexa (citalopram), Paxil (paroxetine) or Zoloft (sertraline), and have well-controlled depression but are experiencing sexual side effects thought to be caused by their current antidepressant medication. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
