To further establish a strong research and academic partnership, neuroscience faculty from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and the Max Planck Florida Institute recently initiated the joint graduate program in Integrative Biology and Neuroscience with an inaugural graduate-level advanced neurophysiology course on the Jupiter campus. The course is taught in a new teaching laboratory with high-tech equipment purchased by a $300,000 Clustering Grant from the New Florida Initiative as well as equipment loaned by FAU Provost and internationally recognized neuroscientist Brenda Claiborne, Ph.D., from her personal laboratory. The New Florida Initiative is a collaborative effort involving the State University System, business and government to deliver the economic talents and innovations to keep Florida globally competitive. Submissions are now being accepted for the three employee recognition awards listed below. The awards will be presented at the Employee Service Awards on April 18 (see listing under "Save the Date").

The President's Leadership Awards program is intended to recognize individual employees of FAU who have rendered services of an extraordinary nature to the University and/or the greater community.

Persons recognized should have played leadership roles in efforts that delivered substantial benefits to the University as a whole, to a community served by the University or to another external population. Leadership can be demonstrated in many ways. In all cases, however, leaders inspire and mobilize others to work cooperatively and effectively toward the betterment of the University or community. Leaders are innovative and resourceful. They have a vision of how the institution, its relationship to the community or the community itself could be made better. Leaders are willing to work hard to turn that vision into reality and they are able to earn the support of others for their projects. Leaders go beyond their job descriptions and exceed the typical expectations of the assignment. Leaders make a difference.

The VALIC Serving U Customer Service Award emphasizes and highlights an FAU employee's commitment to provide top-quality customer service in all situations. The award recognizes employees who have made exceptional contributions, exceeding normal expectations, to further the University's mission by delivering services of superior quality to external or internal customers, partners and/or stakeholders. Nominations for the award may be made by superiors, peers or subordinates in the University's employment hierarchy. Nominations will be accepted in the following categories: SP employees and AMP employees. Two VALIC Serving U Customer Service Awards will be presented. Self-nominations are acceptable and multiple nominations for an employee are also welcome. All nominations will be reviewed by the VALIC Serving U Awards Committee. Temporary employees are not eligible for nomination.

The VALIC Serving U Award Committee is comprised of three University representatives appointed by the Director of Human Resources. The committee will screen nominations and select the recipients for the VALIC Serving U Awards, which will be presented at the Employee Service Awards ceremony on April 18. Each employee honored will receive $1,200 (less taxes) and a framed award certificate. A full description of this award, its criteria and nomination forms may be accessed at www.fau.edu/ServingU. The Gabor Award recognizes two employees each year for their exemplary service to FAU in the performance of their specific jobs. The following employee classes are eligible: Administrative, Managerial and Professional (AMP) and Support Personnel (SP). Selections will be made based on the strength of the nominations received regardless of the employee class. Faculty members are not eligible for this award. AMP and SP employees are eligible for award consideration providing that they have been employed by the University for at least one continuous year. The employees selected will each be given a monetary award of $1,200 (before taxes) and a special plaque.

Deans and Directors must submit written recommendations to their respective Chief Administrative Officers. Each recommendation must be justified based on one of the following criteria:
1. Specific dollar savings
2. Improved efficiency in operations
3. Program improvement through new program implementation or program enhancement of existing standards
The Chief Administrative Officers will submit their two finalists for consideration by the Jeffrey Gabor Award Selection Committee for final review and selection of the winners. The selected winners will be announced at the annual Employee Service Awards Ceremony on April 18. Monetary awards and plaques will be presented at that time.

The Division of Research will consider applications for the 2012 Dissertation Year Award Grants to help students complete their dissertations. The maximum award is $1,500. The completed application and attachments must be submitted electronically by March 19. FAU will host an undergraduate research symposium on the Boca Raton campus on Friday, April 6, in the Live Oak Pavilion. Undergraduate Studies would like to have broad representation in the symposium from every College. On Wednesday, March 14, the Ocean Science Lecture Series at Harbor Branch offers "Human-Centered Computing" by Kenneth Ford, Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition. The emerging concept of human-centered computing represents a significant shift in thinking about intelligent machines and, indeed, about information technology in general. Dr. Ford's lecture will discuss the human-centered perspective and provide a survey of research activities at IHMN developed under this framework.

Students Advocating Volunteer Involvement (SAVI) has partnered with the office of the MacArthur Campus Governor to host the inaugural Frisbee for Friends Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on the recreation fields at the John D. FAU Libraries will host world-renowned historian Gerhard Weinberg, a professor emeritus of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as the sixth lecturer in the biennial K. Frank and Rita Korf Lecture Series, on Wednesday, March 21, at 3:30 p.m. in the Wimberly Library's fifth floor performance space, on the Boca Raton campus. Weinberg's lecture, "A New Look at Hitler and the Beginning of the Holocaust," will highlight documents, some of which were only recently declassified, that show Hitler's views toward the fate of the Jews, and indicate how his murderous intentions were carried out. Weinberg has published extensively on the origins and course of World War II and the Holocaust. The Korfs donated their papers and memorabilia to FAU Libraries in 2001, creating the K. Frank and Rita Korf Collection Endowed Fund, which provides for speakers whose research touches on areas that were important to Kurt Frank Korf. Dr. Wilfried Prewo, chief executive of Hannover Chamber of Industry and Commerce will offer "Can the Euro Survive?" on Thursday, March 22, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the House Chambers, Student Union, Boca Raton campus, with a reception to follow.

The Euro crisis, now in its third year, is still not solved. The attempts to contain the crisis with financial aid packages were insufficient. The Euro countries took steps in late Fall 2011 towards a fiscal union and binding fiscal discipline. But survival of the Euro will also require the European Central Bank to expand its role and become a lender of last resort. The Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Hannover is one of the five largest chambers in Germany. In the international area, the chamber is the primary advisor to companies on exports and investment abroad, and organizes trade missions. Dr. Prewo has a B.A. from Grinnell College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Johns Hopkins University. He taught at the University of Texas at Austin and worked in financial services before assuming his current position. The Lifelong Learning Society Jupiter will present "LUNAFEST: Short Films By, For, About Women" on Thursday, March 22, at 6 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Society complex at FAU Jupiter. The unique film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through nine short films by female filmmakers. It is time once again for the annual FAU Employee Service Awards Ceremony. This year's awards will be held on Wednesday, April 18, in the Live Oak Pavilion on the Boca Raton campus.

The University will recognize completed years of service for regular full-time and part-time employees with continued and completed service of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 45 years at FAU as of 2011.

Please observe these very important points:
- Temporary and adjunct years of service do not apply toward years of service.
- Only employment years working for FAU apply.
- Other State of Florida service or State University System service cannot be added to years of service at FAU.
- Service must be continuous, with no break in service years.
- Service is calculated in "completed" years of service as of Dec. 31, 2011.

Employees celebrating 5 through 15 years of service will not be called up individually for recognition but will be recognized respectfully in groups. Their awards will be available for pick-up at the ceremony.

Employees with 20 through 45 years of service will be called up individually to receive their awards. The electronic check-in for 20-year through 45-year recipients will commence at 8:30 a.m., and refreshments will be served at that time. The program will start at approximately 9:30 a.m.

The University will also acknowledge winners of this year's President's Leadership Awards, Jeffrey Gabor Exemplary Employee Awards, the TIAA CREF Faculty Award and the VALIC Customer Service Award.

Registration is open for "Book Arts 101: Vernal," a popular 3.5-hour introduction immersion book arts course offered by book artist John Cutrone at the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus, on Sunday, March 18, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 20, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Cutrone, the center’s director, will open the course with a 25-minute video about the center's amazing collection of artists' books, most of which are one of a kind or limited editions and made by hand. The Jafee Center for Book Arts, housed in the Winberly Library, is offering Transfer Processes for Book Artists March 24 or 25. Room selection is that time of year when current students who live in the residence halls and apartments, as well as commuter students can select a room on-campus in one of the apartment complexes or in Algonquin Hall. Students will be able to pick the specific room they wish to live in for the 2012-13 academic year. The University Galleries will present the landmark exhibition, "Surfing Florida: A Photographic History," beginning Saturday, March 17 through Saturday, May 12. The exhibition has been developed for the past three years by University Galleries Director W. Rod Faulds and Paul Aho, the exhibition's curator, a lifelong Florida surfer and head of photography and digital imaging at the Paducah School of Art. A series of programs and events will take place the opening weekend beginning Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17. Surfing Florida will employ "media stations" to present film, video, music and interviews with historic surfers. FAU Libraries are hosting "Highlights from the Davis Collection," an exhibition of rare title pages, music scores, books, greeting cards and other music-related materials by renowned composers and publishers from the Richard Beattie Davis Collection through April 7 at the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus. The collection was established by Davis in 1984 and consists largely of first and early editions of scores from the early 1790s to the first two decades of the 20th century. Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Are you currently taking an antidepressant and experiencing sexual side effects? Clinical Research Studies at the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research study to better understand the effects of an investigational antidepressant medication on sexual functioning when compared with an approved medication. We are currently enrolling individuals who are taking Celexa (citalopram), Paxil (paroxetine) or Zoloft (sertraline), and have well-controlled depression but are experiencing sexual side effects thought to be caused by their current antidepressant medication. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
