FAU will be testing and evaluating the capabilities of a lightning hazard prediction system on the Boca Raton campus between 11 and 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 1. Warning horns and strobe lights will be heard and seen at various places around the campus as testing of the system occurs. NO ACTION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN IN RESPONSE TO THE WARNING HORNS AND LIGHTS. Please note these horns are not associated with the current outdoor warning sirens in place on the Boca Raton campus. In order to support faculty and increase access to and enrollment in eLearning, the Center for eLearning requests faculty proposals for eLearning course development and delivery. Faculty selected in this process will receive a stipend of $3,000 to:
- Complete a training program and develop an online course during the summer of 2012
- Teach the newly developed course as an overload at least once by the end of Summer 2013. The overload instruction rate will be $6,000 for full-time faculty and $4,500 for part-time faculty

The accelerated summer program consists of 6 units delivered over 12 weeks during summer 2012 and includes three face-to-face meetings scheduled on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The remaining coursework will be completed online. To be successful in this course, we estimate that you will need to commit to 10 hours of work per week. Faculty can also receive up to 6 hours of individual assistance from instructional designers. Open lab hours with instructional designers will also be available.

Participants will need to confirm their working knowledge of Blackboard via two assessments prior to beginning the program. Instructions for these assessments and information on how to prepare for them will be forwarded to the selected candidates.

Proposals will be reviewed and priority given to:
1. High-demand courses with consistent enrollment demand over the last three years including summers
2. Courses that are deemed strategic in planning eLearning degree programs
3. Courses that are part of an existing eLearning plan within your College/School/Department

FAU will host an undergraduate research symposium on the Boca Raton campus on Friday, April 6, in the Live Oak Pavilion. Undergraduate Studies would like to have broad representation in the symposium from every College. In addition to poster sessions and art/video showings, panels will be organized around broad themes or areas of inquiry.

The VALIC Serving U Customer Service Award emphasizes and highlights an FAU employee's commitment to provide top-quality customer service in all situations. The award recognizes employees who have made exceptional contributions, exceeding normal expectations, to further the University's mission by delivering services of superior quality to external or internal customers, partners and/or stakeholders. Nominations for the award may be made by superiors, peers or subordinates in the University's employment hierarchy. Nominations will be accepted in the following categories: SP employees and AMP employees. Two VALIC Serving U Customer Service Awards will be presented. Self-nominations are acceptable and multiple nominations for an employee are also welcome. All nominations will be reviewed by the VALIC Serving U Awards Committee. Temporary employees are not eligible for nomination.

The VALIC Serving U Award Committee is comprised of three University representatives appointed by the Director of Human Resources. The committee will screen nominations and select the recipients for the VALIC Serving U Awards, which will be presented at the Employee Service Awards ceremony on April 18. Each employee honored will receive $1,200 (less taxes) and a framed award certificate. A full description of this award, its criteria and nomination forms may be accessed at www.fau.edu/ServingU. The Gabor Award recognizes two employees each year for their exemplary service to FAU in the performance of their specific jobs. The following employee classes are eligible: Administrative, Managerial and Professional (AMP) and Support Personnel (SP). Selections will be made based on the strength of the nominations received regardless of the employee class. Faculty members are not eligible for this award. AMP and SP employees are eligible for award consideration providing that they have been employed by the University for at least one continuous year. The employees selected will each be given a monetary award of $1,200 (before taxes) and a special plaque.

Deans and Directors must submit written recommendations to their respective Chief Administrative Officers. Each recommendation must be justified based on one of the following criteria:
1. Specific dollar savings
2. Improved efficiency in operations
3. Program improvement through new program implementation or program enhancement of existing standards
The Chief Administrative Officers will submit their two finalists for consideration by the Jeffrey Gabor Award Selection Committee for final review and selection of the winners. The selected winners will be announced at the annual Employee Service Awards Ceremony on April 18. Monetary awards and plaques will be presented at that time.

They may have had their contact list stolen or compromised. Attachments or links in these types of email are ways to infect your machine with a computer virus and other malware.

Phishing or targeted phishing sends you a message that appears to be legitimate from your bank, credit card company, friend or family member with fake links for you to click on. This is an attempt to steal your personal information or infect your machine with malware. Also email phishing attacks can have an email attachment with the email message. Do not open the email attachments. This could also infect your machine with malware. Make it a practice to always scan any attachment coming from unsolicited email messages.

The 10th Annual South Florida Latin American and Caribbean Studies Graduate Student Conference presents "Selfhood, Statehood, and Interstate Cooperation Across the Americas" on April 19, 2012 at Florida International University. The South Florida Latin American and Caribbean Studies Graduate Student Conference is a collaborative effort between FIU, FAU and the University of Miami and will highlight graduate student research related to Latin America, the Caribbean and the Latino U.S.

The FAU Peace Studies program will host Tibetan Buddhist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery in Atlanta to construct a Mandala Sand Painting in the Schmidt Gallery on the Boca Raton campus. The monks will present the opening ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 25, from noon to 1 p.m. They will then work on the mandala from Sunday, Feb. 26, through Friday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The public is welcome to view the construction of the mandala during these times. There will be a closing ceremony on Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m.

There will be two other public programs while the monks are visiting. On Monday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m., Nathan Katz of the Program of Spirituality at Florida International University will present "What is a Mandala? What is Peace?" The lecture will take place in the House Chambers of the Student Union. Then on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 4 p.m., there will be a film screening of "Sand Painting: The Sacred Art of Tibet" followed by discussion. The screening will take place in the University Theatre.

Students Advocating Volunteer Involvement (SAVI) has partnered with the office of the MacArthur Campus Governor to host the inaugural Frisbee for Friends Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on the recreation fields at the John D. The films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women's health, motherhood, body image, aging, cultural diversity and breaking barriers. All proceeds from LUNAFEST will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund, the leading national organization working to identify and eliminate the environmental causes of breast cancer, and a scholarship for a student attending classes on FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus. LUNAFEST, which is created and funded by LUNA, the maker of whole nutrition bars for women, Established in 2000, the film festival has raised more than $456,000 for Breast Cancer Fund and more than $785,000 for other women's non-profit organizations.

It is time once again for the annual FAU Employee Service Awards Ceremony. This year's awards will be held on Wednesday, April 18, in the Live Oak Pavilion on the Boca Raton campus.

The University will recognize completed years of service for regular full-time and part-time employees with continued and completed service of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 45 years at FAU as of 2011.

Please observe these very important points:
- Temporary and adjunct years of service do not apply toward years of service.
- Only employment years working for FAU apply.
- Other State of Florida service or State University System service cannot be added to years of service at FAU.
- Service must be continuous, with no break in service years.
- Service is calculated in "completed" years of service as of Dec. 31, 2011.

Employees celebrating 5 through 15 years of service will not be called up individually for recognition but will be recognized respectfully in groups. Their awards will be available for pick-up at the ceremony.

Employees with 20 through 45 years of service will be called up individually to receive their awards. The electronic check-in for 20-year through 45-year recipients will commence at 8:30 a.m., and refreshments will be served at that time. The program will start at approximately 9:30 a.m.

The University will also acknowledge winners of this year's President's Leadership Awards, Jeffrey Gabor Exemplary Employee Awards, the TIAA CREF Faculty Award and the VALIC Customer Service Award.

Room selection is that time of year when current students who live in the residence halls and apartments, as well as commuter students can select a room on-campus in one of the apartment complexes or in Algonquin Hall. This confidential and nationally recognized web research survey created by the American College Health Association will assist FAU in collecting precise data about FAU students health habits, behaviors and perceptions. FAU Libraries are hosting "Highlights from the Davis Collection," an exhibition of rare title pages, music scores, books, greeting cards and other music-related materials by renowned composers and publishers from the Richard Beattie Davis Collection through April 7 at the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus. The collection was established by Davis in 1984 and consists largely of first and early editions of scores from the early 1790s to the first two decades of the 20th century. The University Galleries will present the landmark exhibition, "Surfing Florida: A Photographic History," beginning Saturday, March 17 through Saturday, May 12. The exhibition has been developed for the past three years by University Galleries Director W. Rod Faulds and Paul Aho, the exhibition's curator, a lifelong Florida surfer and head of photography and digital imaging at the Paducah School of Art. A series of programs and events will take place the opening weekend beginning Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17. Surfing Florida will employ "media stations" to present film, video, music and interviews with historic surfers. Are you currently taking an antidepressant and experiencing sexual side effects? Clinical Research Studies at the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research study to better understand the effects of an investigational antidepressant medication on sexual functioning when compared with an approved medication. We are currently enrolling individuals who are taking Celexa (citalopram), Paxil (paroxetine) or Zoloft (sertraline), and have well-controlled depression but are experiencing sexual side effects thought to be caused by their current antidepressant medication. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
