Nationally Competetive Scholarships

Daughtrey Scholarships are awarded to an outstanding sophomore based on a portfolio and two interviews. The scholarship provides $3,000 for the junior year, $3,000 for the senior year and $4,000 for a summer experience between the junior and senioryears. High academic potential, strongleadership, clear service to the community and a broad understanding of the world are carefully considered.

English-Speaking Union Scholarship is awarded to one juniorper state for summer study in Britain.The Union considers the applicant's literary and scholastic ability, physical vigor,character and personality. The amount covers the cost of three weeks of summerstudy and transportation.

Ford Foundation Fellowships for Minorities include an annual stipend of $12,000 to the student and an institutional allowance of $6,000 in lieu of tuition and fees. Approximately 50 pre-doctoral fellowships are made for research-based doctoral programs in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences and biological sciences, or for interdisciplinary programs composed of two or more eligible disciplines.

Fulbright Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors to pursue study or a project in their major field at a university in another country for one academic year. Costs covered include round-trip transportation, tuition, living expenses, and frequently an accelerated language course.

Goldwater Scholarships awards up to $7,500 per year for tuition, fees, room, board, and books for the junior/senior years or the senior year to 250 students planning graduate and a career in science, mathematics or engineering. The Goldwater Foundation considers scholastic record, research experience, potential in graduate school, and commitment to a research career.

Howard Hughes Fellowships are 80 pre-doctoral fellowships in biological sciences with up to five years of support possible. The Institute will give $14,500 per year to individuals who have demonstrated superior scholarship and show great promise for future achievement in biomedical research.

James Madison Fellowships provide $24,000 to support two years of graduate study that leads to a Master's degree in history, political science or related social studies. The applicants must agree to teach secondary school for at least one year for each year of financial assistance.

Marshall Scholarships provide almost $30,000 per year (tuition, fees, room board, transportation and books) to 30 seniors for two years of graduate study at any university in the United Kingdom. Marshall Scholars must exhibit a distinguished record, strong leadership skills, significant community service and a focused program of study for graduate school.

Mellon Fellowships are awarded to 80 seniors who plan on a career in teaching and scholarship in one of the humanities. The Mellon Foundation provides $13,500 plus payment of tuition and fees for one year. You must request an application in writing.

NSF Fellowships provide $14,400 per year for three years of graduate study in science or engineering, plus a cost-of-education allowance of $8,600 to the institution. The National Science Foundation grants over 1000 new fellowships to seniors who have demonstrated a strong ability in social science, science and engineering.

Rhodes Scholarships provide approximately $30,000per year to 32 seniors for graduate study at Oxford University for two years. The Rhodes Foundation looks for seniors with very strong academic records, integrity of character, physical vigor, demonstrated leadership, and extensive public service.

Truman Scholarships allot $30,000 for the senior year and graduate school to juniors interested in careers in public service. Approximately 80 scholarships are provided to students who have demonstrated high academic achievement, strong leadership, and sincere interestin a public service career.

Morris K. Udall Scholarships are awarded to 55 sophomores or juniors with outstanding potential who intend to pursue careers in environmental policy or are Native American of Alaskan Native students andintend to pursue careers in health care of tribal public policy. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to $5,000.
