Dr. Hess's research is on Entertainment in the 21st century American novel. He has taught courses on postmodern fiction and on 19th and early 20th century American literature at Harvard, and on the contemporary American novel at Notre Dame, and given lectures on the works of Vonnegut, Pynchon, Faulkner, Hawthorne, and Eliot among others.
