Council for Excellence in Undergraduate Education
In attendance: Sandy Norman, Roy Levow, Diane Alperin, Karl Stevens and Ingrid Johanson for Gary Perry. Budget meetings and illness kept the rest of the members from the meeting.
The minutes of the January 19, 2007 meeting were approved as distributed.
Mary Ann Gosser Esquilin, Interim Dean of Undergraduate Studies, forwarded her report on the Freshman Reading Program for Fall 2007. A very aggressive program has been prepared with an interactive website and the common reading of The Orchid Thief. In addition, Dr. Debra Raines will be teaching a new upper division leadership skills class for the summer. These students will work with the incoming freshmen.
Tim Lenz reported sick but sent in his report on the Core Curriculum Task Force. Roy pointed out that some of their report was returned to the Task Force by the USF Steering Committee for clarification.
Those present discussed the House proposal for a statewide General Education Curriculum. All agreed that it was a bad idea and that FAU was striving for distinction in its core. The chair was directed to send a note to the President and Provost voicing our concern.
The rest of the meeting was spent enjoying the fine lunch provided by the College of Arts and Letters.
The final meeting of the year will be Friday, May 18 at 12:15pm in the President’s Conference Room.
