Dr. Brian Benscoter
Tuesday, Sep 01, 2020Dr. Brian Benscoter is an associate professor in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, Department of Biological Sciences. His research on modeling carbon cycling in subtropical wetland watersheds has resulted in an invitation for Dr. Benscoter to work at the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE), as a program officer with the USDOE's Terrestrial Ecosystem Science Program for this year.
Dr. Brian Benscoter has been a member of the Department of Biological Sciences in Davie since 2010. During his tenure, he has been a vital part of its environmental cluster at the Davie campus, teaching its core course "Principles of Ecology" and a number of critical graduate courses such as research writing.
Dr. Benscoter's laboratory staff consistently includes not only several master's and doctoral students but a cluster of FAU undergraduate students being introduced to research techniques.
They investigate linkages between community and ecosystem ecology, using a bottom-up approach to integrate population and community scale processes to understand ecosystem dynamics.
His research team has been investigating fire and carbon cycling, radioactive energy and carbon emissions from smouldering boreal peat, and monitoring habitat recovery following fire and invasive species management in the Everglades.
This work has been supported by a variety of governmental agencies, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Geological Survey, US Bureau of Land and Management.
