Tom is a published playwright and novelist. His novel "The Blue Man" was selected by author John D. McDonald as one of his favorite novels. Tom has edited five books on film, written theatre articles for the Kenyon Review and other magazines, and with his wife Mary Ellen O'Brien, he founded and edited an internationally recognized publication, "The Film Journal." His work includes writing scripts for National Geographic documentaries, one of which - "Hawaii: Strangers in Paradise" - was awarded an Emmy. With Mary Ellen, Tom was a co-founder and director of the Louisiana Shakespeare Festival in New Orleans. He most recently directed Jean Anouilh's "Antigone" at FAU in Spring 2006. One of his favorite activities is working with young playwrights at FAU, and he often coordinates and directs public readings of original short plays from his Dramatic Writing course.
