Sixth Annual Repertory Dance Theatre Ensemble

by FAU College of Arts and Letters | Monday, Feb 17, 2014

The Department of Theatre and Dance presents the 2014 Repertory Dance Theatre Ensemble on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 1 at 1 and 7 p.m., in the University Theatre, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Single tickets are $20, FAU faculty, staff and alumni are $16, FAU students are $12 and group prices are available. Tickets can be purchased at www.fauevents.com or 1-800-564-9539.

FAU Repertory Dance Theatre Ensemble is pleased to present an exciting and diverse range of dance for its sixth season, including welcoming Yichun Yang as a featured soloist performing traditional Chinese dance. Crystal Patient also will reprise her multi-award winning solo "During Hours," a comedic view of the thankless hard work that restaurant servers endure to please us, their customers. Her newest creation for three dancers, "Blue Print," is an accumulation of past and present work expressing multiple layers of relationships.

The late Sam Cooke, one of this nation's most phenomenal chart-topping, singing voices, is the subject of Maria Konrad's latest work titled "A Change is Gonna Come," her solo for Clarence Brooks, associate professor of dance at FAU. The work pays homage to the Civil Rights Movement and human rights workers universally and, appropriately for Black History Month, celebrates the life and work of international icons like the late Nelson Mandela, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and many others.

The 2009 dance/film collaboration between Mr. Brooks and Joey Bargsten, associate professor of communication at FAU, titled "d o w n/s i d e" will have a second airing. This very witty piece twists reality and time in Escher-like perspectives.

Who better than a dancer-choreographer, someone who is constantly changing clothes, to envision a dance for eight people with abstract, minimalist, repetitive movement based upon putting on or taking off articles of clothing. While no nudity is involved, audience members will experience "Dress Up, Dress Down," performed to a score by the brilliant composer Philip Glass, as either a deeply meditative or, conversely, vastly invigorating look at a daily activity to which we can all relate.

The program is subject to change. For more information, contact Clarence Brooks at Clarence.brooks@fau.edu.
