faculty photoDr. Ely specializes in the history of imperial Russia during the nineteenth century. His book, THIS MEAGER NATURE: LANDSCAPE AND NATIONALITY IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY RUSSIA, was published in 2002 by Northern Illinois University Press. It explores the historical construction of the image and idea of Russia's natural environment.

His current research focuses on the rise of a sphere of public activity and public opinion in late-imperial Russia, particularly on the tumultuous five-year period between the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish war and the assassination of Tsar Alexander II.

Dr. Ely has received several awards for his research including Fulbright-Hays, IREX and social Science Research Council grants. His teaching interests include European intellectual and Cultural History, the history of Russia and the Soviet Union, and the creation and imagination of space and place in history.
