Picturing Florida: Ellen Harvey & Marc Dean Veca
Artists in the Exhibition: Ellen Harvey was born in the United Kingdom and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She has exhibited widely in the U.S. and Europe including a project for the Whitney Museum of American Art. Harvey's work is comprised of video, installation, drawing, and painting and generally concerned with the theoretical and social implications of painting's status as an art signifier within society.
Mark Dean Veca earned a BFA in painting from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Veca specializes in large-scale projects that combine comics and trompel-oeil wall painting. His numerous invitations to create wall paintings and serve as a resident artist have taken him to many institutions in the U.S., a project in Japan, and he recently created a temporary installation for Nike.
Picturing Florida
presented two artists, both painters who have each created a work on the walls of the Schmidt Center Gallery. Both artists are participating in year long residencies involving periodic meetings with community groups in Palm Beach County, who become familiar with the artist past work and provide insights into their perceptions and experiences of life in Florida. The works Harvey and Veca produce for FAU reflect aspects of these community interactions and each artists' own Florida experiences.
